UltraMox Six-Year-Old Series

Makenzie Causer is reaping the rewards of hard work, with victory today in the UltraMox Six-Year-Old, taking out both the Grand Final (co-sponsored by NZPH) and the overall series crown with her imported mare Anouk G Z (by Action Breaker out of a Calvados mare).

The mare was imported in December 2021 from Belgium, coming out just once as a five-year-old before her season proper as a six-year-old.

“There were quite a few six-year-olds we didn’t do through the season so I am so surprised she was still in touch,” said the Christchurch based rider. But it was all about consistency and that, they have in spades.

“She’s very well bred. Mum found her – she’s a very good horse shopper.”

With an eye to the future, Makenzie and her mum Leah were keen to make sure they bought good quality bloodlines. “She hasn’t disappointed at all . . . this one is definitely for the future.”

Twenty-one-year-old Makenzie couldn’t be happier with her series final show, having secured two of the age group crowns. “I produce young horses as a business so this is really exciting to have success like this.”

She likes to take her time producing each one at its own pace. “I work with the horse for the right outcomes without a title or class or anything else in mind. They need to tell you physically and mentally how they are going and I just work off that. I don’t believe in agendas, it is just what is right for the horse I am sitting on.”

Makenzie has her Aspen Park Performance Horses based alongside dad Graeme’s Aspen Bloodstock, with 32 horses across the two operations.

In the grand final Makenzie and Anouk G Z were one of three combinations to come through for the jump-off from the 10-strong field. Both Makenzie and Sophie Scott (Palmerston North) aboard LT Holst Eloquent (by Emerald Van’T Ruytershof out of a Crawford mare) were double clear, but Makenzie’s 36.87 second effort just pipped Sophie’s 37.95 round. “The course today was lovely but the conditions a bit tough,” said Makenzie. Coming in for third was Tara Gower (Ohura) aboard Riverhills Legend (by Euro Sport Centavos out of a Ranfurly mare) who picked up four faults in the jump-off.
