Daniel Blundell and Cadenza NZPH almost didn’t make it to the start line at the Siteland Development Auckland Showjumping North Island Championships but it was just as well they made a late dash to the event.

The Auckland combination head home the six-strong field to take the honours in the POLi Payments Premier League North Island Championship (sponsored by Veterinary Associates Equine) with the only double clear of the class.

“The horse grazed his leg during the week and I wasn’t even sure we were going to come down but when  I got to the stables this morning he was good so I brought him down,” said Daniel who has faced a challenging few weeks with his truck out of action.

He praised ring one course designer Eryn Duffy. “She builds so well and gives us lots of room. Today was great.”
Emelia Forsyth (Clevedon) and Henton Faberge came in for second with a total of eight faults over the two rounds, with Phillip Steiner (Tauranga) and Cassina Dior in third, also on eight faults but with a slower time.

It was a small class for the Country TV Pony Grand Prix North Island Championship (sponsored by The Workshop), with Samantha-Lee Wakeling (Wellsford) and BMW Sharpshooter taking the win on a total of eight faults from the two rounds, and Jordyn Appleton (Auckland) and Burma Chilli second on 12 penalties.

It was a dream come true for the winner of the FMG Young Rider Series North Island Championship (sponsored by Zealandia Nurseries), Sophia Blackbourn (Tamahere) and 11-year-old Roxette ECPH. “I only have a few clears under my belt so I am very grateful for the win,” she said. This is their first season in Young Rider.

Both Sophia and Olivia Prendergast (Matamata) aboard Stellar were double clear in the jump-off but the eventual winner was super speedy, crossing the flags nearly five seconds ahead of the runner-up. Eighteen started the class, with five coming back for the jump-off.

Sophie Fisher (Cambridge) and Zara PPH headed home the 26-strong field in the Harrison Lane Pro-Am Rider Series North Island Championship (sponsored by IRT). Just three came back for the jump-off where Sophie’s four fault round was just the ticket, bagging her first-ever win.

“It means a lot to win,” she said. “I have been trying to do pro-ams for a long time. I had my old horse Cherry who sort of had a rail every time, so we weren’t that competitive.”

She bought Zara PPH from Australia six months ago and while it has been a tough road to get her going, the two had now just clicked. “She is quite strong and forward, but an awesome jumper.”

The Matthews Hanoverians Seven-year-Old Series North Island Championship (sponsored by Inkster Landscapes) went the way of Auckland Showjumping committee member Edward Bullock (Waiuku) aboard Kiwi Sundance, with the only clear inside time in the opening round. He was over the moon.

“It’s all a bit surreal,” he said. “I have got a very nice young horse who jumped his heart out for me – probably a bit too keen in places so I had to hold him back a bit. We’ve had a pretty dam good start this season.”

Hannah Bodle (Morrinsville) aboard Haupouri Galileo NZPH was second with their single time fault from the first round, with Oliver Croucher (Cambridge) and Ricochet MVNZ third.

Tara Gower (Ohura) had a super North Island Championships, taking the quinella in the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider North Island Championship (sponsored by GJ Gardner Homes) with Riverhills Legend and November Rain and backing that up with first and third respectively with the same horses in the UltraMox Six-Year-Old Series North Island Championship (sponsored by AMS Saddlery). They were very special wins, given Riverhills Legend was bred by Tara’s mum, with the rider doing all the work with the youngster. “I just couldn’t be prouder,” she said. “He is the coolest horse to ride and just so easy. It feels amazing to take first and second in the junior, especially given the age of them.” This was just Riverhills Legend’s fourth junior start. Both horses were double clear in the class.

Vicki Prendergast (Matamata) and Stiletto C took the honours in the East Coast Performance Horses Five-Year-Old Series North Island Championship (sponsored by Steelright Framing) with a double clear in a smart time. Paula Brocklehurst (Wellsford) and Parisian Affair notched the only other double clear of the class for second.

“It’s pretty special to win,” said Vicki. “I  do ok but I don’t win a lot of classes, especially because the horse belongs to my daughter Grace, so it is nice for her to win. Stiletto C is such a lovely little horse but a bit hot, so we have taken our time with her. It is nice to see her coming through.”

The Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider Series North Island Championship (sponsored by Premier Horse Transport) was won by Joanna Bullock (Warkworth) with High Jump. “You always hope to win a good class like this,” she said. “You dream of it but it doesn’t happen a lot. I am just absolutely thrilled.”

Joanna and High Jump notched the only double clear of the 17 starters, with Ashley Johnston (Whangarei) and Miss Vee NZPH second on four faults.

The very speedy Larina Dolman (Gisborne) and Kiwi Lansing whipped home to take out the Petcover North Island Speed Championship, with Hannah Bodle (Morrinsville) and Charlie NZPH second. “It’s pretty cool,” said Larina. “Winning any class is pretty cool. It does make me very proud of little Reg.”

The Giltrap Group Pony 1.2m North Island Championship was won by Jordyn Appleton (Auckland) and Burma Chilli. “This is just so cool,” said Jordyn. “Honestly, she is the coolest pony ever. She can be difficult at times, but she did really good today. She is just the best.”

Coming in second in the eight-strong field was Samantha-Lee Wakeling (Wellsford) on BMW Sharpshooter.

Isabelle Jameson (Whangarei) and Totaranui Ripslinger won the Auckland Insulation 1.1m North Island Championship ahead of Emma Gaze (Ohaupo) on Shuttle Bug, with Amanda Illston (Auckland) on Verdelho taking out the Mainland Coaches 1.2m North Island Championship with Maddison Greatorex (Mangapai) and Groove Girl PSH second. Mackenzy Clarkson (Hamilton) and Kaimanawa Wind Dancer took out the Pony 1m North Island Championship, beating home Francesca Bishell (Auckland) and Diamond Magnificent by the slimmest of margins.

It was a very challenging North Island Champs for hosts Auckland Showjumping who had to  cancel their opening day of competition due to rain and high winds. They reshuffled the programme and managed to fit everything in over Saturday and Sunday, much to the delight and appreciation of riders. The show attracted 360 combinations.

Eryn Duffy designed the courses in ring one with Tony Hutton in ring two, and Edward Bullock in ring three.
