Nicole White made it four from five with another victory in the EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix, this time at the Ashburton ESNZ Show Jumping and Show Hunter Championships.

The sports massage therapist from Invercargill steered LC Samson to a solid win in the rather compact class. It was their fourth Grand Prix win this season from five starts but it almost didn’t go their way. They were clear in the opener but took the last fence in the second round. “I looked over at the clock and honestly didn’t know if I had done enough for the win,” said Nicole.  As it was, they crossed the flags in 58.68 seconds, with runner-up Lucinda Askin (Ashburton) and Flying Dutchman DHU also on four faults but slightly slower in 59.11.

“He was good today,” said Nicole of the 15-year-old. “It is really nice to just be able to sit on him and go out and enjoy what I am doing. He does love his job.”

Nicole had plenty of praise for course designer Donella Still. “The course (in the Grand Prix) was lovely – it was really nice to ride, technical and big. It suited my boy!”

She figures the challenging season and lack of shows has actually worked in their favour. “We have done more training and just not having a show every weekend has given us both more time to regroup.”

She’s had the rather opinionated horse five years. He was a stallion when he arrived but they soon gelded him. She figures that late gelding is where the arrogance and opinion comes from. The combination was also fourth in the FEI CSI1* class.

Nicole is now looking forward to the remaining ‘big’ shows of the season – the Tavendale & Partners New Zealand National Jumping Championships and Land Rover Horse of the Year.

In the Tavern Harewood FEI CSI1* it was a quinella to Queenstown’s Olivia Robertson who won with a double clear round aboard Casino GNZ and placed second with a four fault effort on Grandaire. Eight combinations started the international class with seven coming back for the second round. Clears in the opener went to Olivia and Lucinda Askin (Ashburton) on Flying Dutchman DHU. There were four clears in the second round, with all but Olivia carrying faults.

Angus Price (Winton) and the former Pony of the Year Fun House took out the Country TV Pony Grand Prix coming home a snip ahead of Molly Smith (Timaru) aboard Vapour Trail NZPH. The two combinations were the only ones to keep their slates clear over the two round competition, with Angus stopping the clock at 53.54 seconds to Molly’s 54.04 second effort.

The show, which attracted 390 horses and riders, ran over three near perfect days at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds. Tony Hutton assisted Donella Still in course designing in ring one with Sarah Ching in ring two and Emma Barker in ring three.
