Tegan Fitzsimon and Windermere Cappuccino today showed all the class that has made them two-time POLi Payments World Cup Series winners, at the season opener at the Taranaki Equestrian Spring Show.

It is the fourth time on the trot they have won the Hawera World Cup round. “We have never lost a World Cup at Hawera,” says Tegan. “I am not even sure why – he is a pretty reliable horse anyway and it just all seems to fall into place there.”

The opening round was to have been held in October in Hawke’s Bay but that was cancelled, so riders were hugely appreciative that Taranaki stepped in to host the opening round.

Eight started the class with all coming back for the second round over the Kevin Hansen-designed course. Tegan, along with World Cup debutants Phillip Steiner (Tauranga) aboard Cassina Dior and Sophie Scott (Palmerston North) on Glenbrooke Rich as Roses were all clear in the first round, with four others on four faults.

Tegan, who has been based in the North Island since early September, said the course was a nice one for the opening qualifier. “It wasn’t overly big but was really nice,” she said.

It didn’t all go smoothly though. A strong gust of wind blew the treble over as Tegan and Windermere Cappuccino jumped the fence before. “So we were held on course while they rebuilt it and then had to go straight into the treble. We did lose our rhythm after the stop but he tried so hard in that treble. We came into it at a deadbeat canter so he had to really reach over the middle oxer.” The well-performed duo found their flow after the triple bar.

“For the second round I just wanted to basically keep him rolling. We got the inside turn to one fence and kept going. He is a naturally quicker type horse.”

She knew she had Phillip to follow her. “They just jumped out of their skins. Cassina Dior is a very exciting horse for the future and for our sport in New Zealand.”

Tegan and Windermere Cappuccino came home all clear in 57.41 seconds with Phillip in second place, also all clear in a time of 60.33. Daniel Webb (Hunterville) and WSJ Centaur were third, finishing on four faults from the two rounds in a time of 56.51 for the second, with Brooke Edgecombe (Waipukurau) and LT Holst Andrea fourth.

Today’s win capped off an excellent show for Tegan and her team. Campari won the 1.3m and was second in the 1.35-1.45m, with LT Holst Harley first equal in the UltraMox Six-Year-Old. Global PH Cupid was double clear in the 1.2m yesterday and clear in the first round of the six-year-old today but had the first fence of the second round down, so retired. That was the only rail of the entire show for the team.

“I am just really pleased to have the series finally underway. We are so lucky the Taranaki Equestrian Jumping Group stepped in and went out of their way to make it work. It has been a great show with some really competitive classes,” said Tegan.

Penny Borthwick (Masterton) continued her winning ways in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix, taking the class aboard Foxden’s Merlot and placing fourth on Rednalhgih Cowan. Seven started the class with just Penny and Sarah Nelson (Taupo) aboard Phantom Warrior coming back for the jump-off. Sarah was far quicker than Penny but paid for her speed with  a rail, costing her the win.
