Jesse Campbell and Gambesie are in the top 10 at the end of the dressage in the CCO4*-S at the Bicton International Horse Trials in the United Kingdom.

The Kiwi combo scored 24.1 penalty points in the hugely-competitive 107-strong class which is being led by Olympic long lister Laura Collett (GBR) aboard London 52 on 21, with Alex Hua Tian (CHINA) in second and third on his mounts Jilsonne van Bareelhof (21.4) and Don Geniro (21.6).

Samantha Lissington and Ricker Ridge Sooty GNZ are in 13th spot on 24.8, Amanda Pottinger aboard Just Kidding on 28.1, Caroline Powell with Greenacres Special Cavalier on 30.1, Andrew Nicholson and Swallow Springs on 30.8, Samantha with Ricker Ridge Rui scored 31.4, and Bruce Haskell on Amiro Sky sit on 32.9.

In the CCI4*-L, Nicola Wilson (GBR) and JL Dublin lead the 89 combinations on 28.7, with Andrew and Monbeg Exclusive the best of the Kiwis on 34.7, Dan Jocelyn and Lissyegan Rory not far behind on 35.8, Dan and Duke of Champions 37.7, Tayla Mason aboard Centennial 38.5 and Hollie Swain with Solo, 42.2.

Tonight’s cross country course has been designed by Helen West, with Captain Mark Phillips as her adviser. “I am so excited,” she said. “I have always wanted the opportunity to showcase Bicton to a wider, international audience. From a designer’s point of view, there is so much different terrain to play with, but I have been mindful of keeping the flow. It has been a joy being able to focus on one track [instead of several national classes] and being able to appreciate how beautiful the park is.”

Mark had made a few “subtle tweaks” to her design. “He has so much experience as a designer and there is not much he hasn’t tried, so his advice and support has been absolutely invaluable.”
