New Zealand’s offshore based showjumpers are finishing 2023 on a high with some solid results at the weekend.

Leading the charge was multi Olympian Bruce Goodin who with his Tokyo mount Backatorps Danny V was seventh in the PKO Bank FEI World Cup 1.55m Grand Prix in Poznan, Poland. It was a big class, with 50 combinations starting but only seven coming back for the jump-off where Frank Schuttert (NED) and Isis took the win with a double clear in 36.08 seconds. Bruce and Danny had four in the jump-off in their 36.68-second effort.

Earlier in the show they were eighth in the CSI4* Big Tour 1.55m class which was won by Pim Mulder (NED) aboard Viktor Z who were double clear in 36.9. The Kiwi combo were one of 11 combinations from the 67-strong opening start list to come back for the jump-off where they again picked up four in their 39.51-second round.

Bruce and Azmir D’ Asbo Z placed fourth in the Medium Tour 1.45m class. Jaroslaw Skryczynski (POL) and Kimboy took the win with a double clear in 37.05 seconds. Bruce and Azmir were faster, crossing the flags in 36.65 but had a rail. Fifty-three started the class with 11 coming back for the jump-off.

Sharn Wordley was flying in Ocala, Florida. He teamed up with Champion League to place second in the 29-strong $150,000 Lugano Diamonds Grand Prix thanks to going double clear in 42.56 seconds. He also placed ninth on Brin d’or de Haute Melen Z who picked up four faults in its 44.6 second jump-off effort, with Uma O’Neill and Clockwise of Greenhill Z 12th with a four-fault 47.23 second jump-off. The class was won by Beat Mandli (SUI) aboard Amiro BZ won were double clear in 41.15 seconds. Fifteen combinations came back for the jump-off.

Sharn and Champion League were double clear in 34.48 seconds to place second in the $50,000 CSI3* Grand Prix qualifier. He and Brin d’or de Haute Melen Z were sixth with their all clean 37.37 effort. The 26-strong class was won by Luis F Larrazabel (VEN) aboard Belle de Muze who were double clear in 33.57 seconds.

Sharn and Mick Jagger were second in the CSI3* 1.45m two phase which was won by Samantha Schaefer (USA) aboard Frasier, going double clear in 32.79. The Kiwi combo were also all clear but in 33.31. In the 23-strong $50,000 Lugano Diamonds Prix, Sharn placed eighth and ninth respectively aboard Mick Jagger and Valentine Car with four faults apiece in the opening round. The class was won by Tracy Fenny (USA) aboard MTM Apple with a slick double clear.

Richard Gardner was chuffed with the efforts of his team at the Salzburg Arena Messezentrum in Austria where he and Calisto 5 placed eighth in the CSI3* 1.55m Grand Prix of Salzburg which was won by Marc Houtzager (NED) aboard Sterrehof’s Dante with a double clear in 43.33. Richard and Calisto were one of just nine combinations from the 48-strong field to come back for the jump-off where they picked up four faults in their 47.96-second round. Earlier in the show, Richard and Carl Otto 5 were 11th in the CSI3* opening 1.40m.

Closer to home, Sam Whale and Fleur Delacour were sixth in the World Cup Qualifier at the Summer Classic in Sydney. The class was won by Sam Overton aboard Oaks Cassanova. Sam and Fleur were also fifth in the 1.45-1.50m Magic Millions two phase class in Sydney which was won by Philip Lever aboard Billionaire NZPH. Annabel Francis, competing in Belgium, and Sam McIntosh in Spain, both picked up minor placings in lower classes.
