Te Aroha teen Rylee Sheehan couldn’t be happier with his 12-year-old horse, Bandito NZPH who won his second Grand Prix of the season at the GJ Gardner Homes Show at Woodhill Sands.

It was down to Rylee and Glen Beal (Pukekohe) aboard Soprano in the 10-strong EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix Series class jump-off where Bandito NZPH was just too quick, coming home nearly 10 seconds faster than the opposition. Both picked up four faults apiece in the jump-off with Rylee crossing the flags in 38.3 seconds to Glen’s 48.98.

“We were out first so I knew I had to put the pressure on,” said Rylee, who juggles his riding with his work at Te Akau Racing. It’s just their third Grand Prix of the season, and with a tally of two wins and a sixth so far, there’s not much to complain about.

He is now aiming the gelding for a POLi Payments World Cup start at Dannevirke in the New Year.

Rylee also started Castakko Xtreme in her first Grand Prix start for a sixth placing.  “She took a while to mature mentally but was consistent at juniors last season and has now stepped up and just gotten better.”

Daniel Blundell (Auckland) had a trio of horses in the class, picking up third with Oprah MVNZ, who while clear in the opener, picked up two time faults, and was fifth aboard Miranda MVNZ and seventh on Carrado MVNZ.

It was complete domination by three young men in the FMG Young Rider Series class with Ben Weir (Auckland), Rylee and Liam Rutland (Te Awamutu) starting two horses a piece and filling the six top places in the 12-strong class.

Five came back for the jump-off where Ben and Amorcito took the win with a double clear in 39.2 with Rylee and Bandito NZPH also all clean but stopping the clock at 41.41 for second. Rylee was the fastest of the jump-off aboard Castakko Xtreme with a 36.41-second round but paid for it with a rail and had to settle for third with Liam and Kiwi Delux also taking a rail for fourth, and fellow four-faulter Ben on Cil Dara Bonaparte fifth.

Zara Preece-Twose (Auckland) and TC Piano Man notched the only clear of the opening round in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix. Nine started the class with runner-up Samantha-Lee Wakeling (Wellsford) and BMW Sharpshooter on four faults and third-placed Zara Main (Auckland) with Blue Crush on eight. Zara was also fourth with Dingmac Demoiselle who picked up nine penalties in the opener.

Pip Howells designed the courses in ring one with Danielle Watts in ring two and Gina Moss in ring three. The show attracted 257 combinations.

Mosgiel played host to the two day Otago Spring Show with a fabulous turnout of riders and even the weather playing ball . . . right until the last ring was packed down. Otago Show Jumping Group president Anne Beattie was chuffed to have all three jumping rings in the main oval providing good ground conditions for all. “Overall it made for a very successful first show of the season for us,” she said.

Jessica Hore (Millers Flat) had a brilliant show, picking up wins in both the FMG Young Rider and Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider series’ classes, aboard Beaumont Birdie and Global PH Mylorde respectively, as well as a third in the Cavalleria Toscana Horse Mini Prix Series with Beaumont Birdie.

The show attracted 185 combinations with a particularly good turnout of riders in show hunter.

Emma Barker designed the courses in ring one with Mark Whelan in ring two and Tony Hutton in ring three.

The organising committee’s attention now moves to the South Island Championships (January 13-15).

The Ellesmere A&P Show in Canterbury ran a small handful of series classes with Lex Peddie tasked with designing the courses in ring one.

Makenzie Causer (Christchurch) was on fire in the FMG Young Rider, taking the quinella with Copabella Camouflage and Lord Axel GNZ. Molly Moffatt (Christchurch) also had a great show, winning the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider Series class on Glenmark, and placing second and third in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix class aboard Te Ngaio Raggamuffin and Freestyle Twyst & Shout.
