National showjumping champ Sophie Scott is back at the top of the podium, this time at the Northern Hawke’s Bay Jumping Championships in Hastings.
She and Waitangi Skynet were comfortable winners of the EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix class, heading home 24 other combinations to take the honours. Just five came back to be challenged in the jump-off by the Greg Best-designed course. This time however, no-one could keep their slates clean, with Sophie and Waitangi Skynet winning on a four fault round. Speedsters Melody Matheson (Havelock North) and Cortaflex Enya MH were second on eight, with Nakeysha Lammers (Hamilton) with Resolution third and Samantha van Lierde (Cambridge) aboard Cadillac NZPH in fourth.
“Sky was really good,” said a very happy 20-year-old. “He is the most consistent wee horse. The whole season he has gone up and up and up.”
Sophie said the course was certainly technical and tested everyone. “There were a few really technical lines in there and lots of people found it tough. Time was very tight in the jump-off. I thought the first round went really well for us – Sky was smooth and jumped well.”
She fully claimed their rail mid-course in the jump-off. “I went for a five stride and at the last minute chickened out and went for six . . . it wasn’t the best thing to do and was completely my fault. I was really disappointed with myself.”
Skynet was the “sweetest” horse to have around and one with an interesting personality – in a nice way! “He is easy to do everything with and just loves his job. He goes into the ring and always wants to please. It has been a real dream season for us.”
Hawke’s Bay proved a happy hunting ground for Sophie who also took the quinella in the FMG Young Rider Series class, winning on Lakota and placing second on LDS Cardo. It was just her and Olivia Dalton (Karaka) aboard Cil Dara Bonaparte who came through to the jump-off from the original 11 starters. All three combinations were double clear with a very speedy 30.45 second round from Lakota winning over LDS Cardo’s 33.03 and Olivia’s 33.49.
Sophie also picked up a few other minor placings including fifth in the horse mini prix aboard LDS Cardo.
It was a quinella also for the very in-form Penny Borthwick (Masterton) in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix too, winning aboard Rednalhgih Cowan and second on Foxden’s Merlot. They were the only two combinations to go clear in the opening round, with Annie Moffett (Napier) and Korokipo Kid third as the fastest of four four-faulters in the 10-strong field.
