Larina Dolman made it two from two in securing back-to-back victories in the Harrison Lane Pro-Am Rider Series.

The Gisborne 23-year-old didn’t even have to start her beloved Kiwi Lansing at the Series Finals to secure the victory. She got the 13-year-old as a rising four-year-old and together they’ve done extremely well. “He has been an absolute star,” she said. “He has never really put a foot wrong the whole time. It is pretty cool to win the pro-am series twice on the same horse.” The combination have previously won the seven-year-old series.

“I wanted to do well in the series this year but didn’t really chase it as much as we did last year. He did well though – he had a fair few wins . . . more wins than placings!”

She loves the goal of a series. “There’s not much point going to a show otherwise when you consider you have to travel a way and it costs to be there.”

Larina says they would have headed to the series final show if they had needed the start to secure the win but says it’s a long way from Gisborne to Masterton otherwise. “It is a long way to travel if he doesn’t need to be ridden or do another round.”

She is hoping to get a few more seasons out of Lansing before he either retires or heads off to teach another young rider some new tricks. “He loves going to shows. He thinks everyone is there to watch him,” she says. “At home he is a real member of the family and is in the paddock right by the house. He neighs at any vehicle that comes out because he thinks it means food. If he could live inside he would!”

Larina works for Fruit Fed monitoring apple orchards, a job she says gives her plenty of time to fit in her riding.

Today in the grand final seven of the 17 starters in a very competitive class came back for the jump-off where Kim Best (Hawke’s Bay) and LT Teacher’s Pet set the scene as the opening combination on track, coming home clear in 42.93 seconds. It was a little wait for the next double clears which came in a flurry from the last four combinations.

Last out was Tanya Hansen (Taranaki) and Euro Champagne who flew round to take the win in 41.65 seconds but certainly had a life at the last fence. Kim was second with Mandy Illston (Masterton) and Iguazu third.
