Emily Hayward has added another trophy to her bulging cabinet, this time winning both the Premier League and Young Rider crowns at the Showjumping Auckland North Island Championship Show.

The 20-year-old from Te Awamutu last season won the prestigious Olympic Cup as Showjumper of the Year and is no stranger to North Island titles . . . but each one is as special as the other.

Today, she and her 10-year-old Australian bred-to-race thoroughbred Belischi HM headed home eight other combinations to take the honours in the POLi Payments North Island Premier League over the Eryn Duffy-designed course. Emily and Belischi HM were the only combination to finish the two-round competition with a clean slate. In the opening round, Emelia Forsyth (Clevedon) and Henton Faberge were clear but picked up a single time fault, with Tegan Fitzsimon (Christchurch) aboard Windermere Cappuccino and Briar Burnett-Grant (Taupo) on Fiber Fresh Veroana on four faults apiece.

In the second round, all six combinations to come back were clear but as each carried their first round penalties, it was Emily’s to claim. “The plan in the second round was just to go in and go clear,” she said. “I was a little careful as he wasn’t overly confident on the ground which was quite wet. He’s your typical thoroughbred who prefers it hard and fast.”

The Ross Smith-trained rider said the track was quite technical but Eryn had designed at Mystery Creek the weekend before, so it was as she had expected. “I am really happy with him,” she said.

She had kept Belischi ticking over through the winter months and he had a month’s break while she competed in Australia. “We had a bit of a late start because of that and this is just his fifth or sixth outing. He just tries so hard – he is very spooky and quirky but you can’t not love him.”

Earlier in the show, Emily and Belischi won the FMG North Island Young Rider Championship with another double clear effort – his second Young Rider win of the season. “I think we’ve been a bit lucky with a lack of double clears in both which is normally the only way he can win – he isn’t overly fast, especially in those speedy young rider classes.”

She plans to chase the Horse Grand Prix, Young Rider and the World Cup classes this season, as well as defend her Olympic Cup crown. “I planned my season backwards,” she says. “I started at the big one and work around that.”In the Country TV North Island Pony Grand Prix class, it was a battle of the double clear rounds from Maddison Greatorex (Waipu) aboard Spotified and Aimee Collinson (Clevedon) on Moonlight Glow. In the end it was Maddison who won the day, coming home in 48.99 seconds to Aimee’s 49.21 with Georgia Bouzaid (Cambridge) and Redcliffs Bill on four faults from the two rounds. It topped off an excellent championships for Georgia who also won the Equifibre North Island Junior Rider crown aboard Emily Hayward’s former horse AP Ninja on whom she was also second in the Site Land Development North Island Speed Horse. She and Redcliffs Bill were also fourth in the Bates Saddles North Island Speed Pony.

Today’s classes brought to a close three days of hotly-contested jumping at the Franklin A&P Showgrounds. The champs attracted 650 horses and ponies from all over New Zealand.
