A small but quality clutch of Kiwis head across the channel to the FEI Eventing World Breeding Championships at Mondial du Lion in France this week. It’s an event that always attracts a lot of attention as is often where the stars of tomorrow start to show their class.

Tim Price and Happy Boy are the only New Zealanders in the CCIYH3*-L for seven-year-olds. Dutch-bred Happy Boy has spent all of his international competitive career with Tim and this will be his first start at this level. The black gelding is by Indoctro out of W Amelusina 17 (by Odermuser). The class has attracted 67 combinations from 15 countries.

There are three Kiwis in the CCIYH2*-L for six-year-olds which has 42 entries from 19 countries.

Jesse Campbell lines up aboard Global Candy Boy on whom he placed sixth in the CCI2*-S at Gatcombe Park in their last start. The Irish-bred bay gelding is by Sligo Candy Boy out of Star of Clover (by Clover Echo).

Caroline Powell has two on the card – Greenacres Special Cavalier and Rock Midnight. The two are both Irish-bred and have had two starts apiece with the former Olympian.
Greenacres Special Cavalier is by Cavalier Royale out of Greenacres Touch (by Touchdown) while Rock Midnight is by Loughehoe Guy out of Hiltown Lass (by Robertstown Boy VII).

Pierre Michelet (FRA) is the cross country course designer for both fields while Jean Pierre Cosnuau (FRA) is tasked with the showjumping courses. Kiwi Stuart Bishell is on the ground jury for the CCI3*-L class.

The event gets underway on Wednesday (October 16) afternoon with the first horse inspection followed by two days of dressage, the cross country on Saturday and showjumping on Sunday.
