Tim Myers is claiming “ a bit of luck” helped him win the Equissage Horse Grand Prix aboard Surreal at the Masterton A&P Show at the weekend . . . but those who know him would beg to differ.

The Hawera farrier headed home 17 other combinations in the class. Each of the five who came through to the jump-off picked up four faults, and as second to go, Tim knew he and his 10-year-old mare couldn’t waste any time.

“She did jump awesome,” said Tim. “I was lucky it all worked out. Brooke (Edgecombe) was quick enough but had one down and I knowing the three who were going to follow me, I knew I had to be relatively quick.”

His single rail came at the second to last where he took a check before a big square oxer. “It was stupid of me, I should have just kept attacking.”
But he knew he had gone pretty quick – enough to put the pressure on those following. Tim stopped the clock at 42.3 seconds, with Brooke and LT Holst Andrea second with four faults in 44.09 seconds.

“It’s nice to win,” he said. “You never actually back yourself to win but you should go in confident that on your day you can win – confident and capable but never expectant.”

It’s been a good season for Tim and Surreal, albeit a little light since their Spark King Country Taupo Classic 1.4m CSI1* at the Christmas Classic in Taupo. “We’ve only done three in the new year. She was clean at Hawera but there were 12 in that jump-off and we didn’t get a ribbon. She’s been jumping well. It’s tricky having just one horse and it means my riding is not as sharp as it needs to be. She is ridden every day but if you have a few to compete, you keep your eye in.”

Tim, who spends around 70% of his work time shoeing race horses, also won the mini prix aboard Surreal. Next on their agenda is the Gold Tour at Takapoto Estate Show Jumping.

In the Country TV Pony Grand Prix winner Ally Stevenson (Hastings) and Jakaranda were the only combination of the 10 starters to go clear in the opening round.
