Our “Why”

The NZ Secondary Schools Equestrian Championships [aka the Interschools] enable younger riders and their teammates to enjoy taking part in equestrian sports during Tournament Week.  For many rangitahi, this is the first – and sometimes the only – opportunity to connect with an organised event within the equestrian sport.  Students get to try something new, in a safe and encouraging environment, while also supporting their teammates as they represent their school. Parents and caregivers share in the joys of their child’s experience, often learning something new.  Follow us on Facebook Events (click the logo) – see the Discussion tab.

It is the third year the event is being held concurrently at the Fiber Fresh National Equestrian Centre, Taupō and the Dunstan Horsefeeds National Equestrian Centre, McLeans Island, Christchurch.  Here’s a taste of the action captured last year by TVNZ:  https://www.nzequestrian.org.nz/2024/09/secondary-schools-championships/

The Champs are an opportunity for our school-aged riders to try something new, and the timetable is set out so riders can take part in different disciplines as well as supporting their teammates across multiple disciplines.   In 2024, we had record numbers that have grown by 30-41% across both venues as many more students from intermediate and secondary schools across the motu compete in the four-day tournament.

New to competing? this Introductory Membership could be the answer.

You pay a flat fee to compete at introductory levels in any of the abovementioned disciplines.  See our Membership page for more.

A look back at Interschools 2024 …

Also referred to as the Interschools, this unique, multi-discipline event is being held by Equestrian Sports New Zealand, the New Zealand Pony Clubs Association and the New Zealand Secondary School Sports Council (NZSSSC).  It is the third year the event is being held concurrently at the Fiber Fresh National Equestrian Centre, Taupō and the Dunstan Horsefeeds National Equestrian Centre, McLeans Island, Christchurch.

The Interschools are an opportunity for our school-aged riders to try something new, and the timetable is set out so riders can take part in different disciplines as well as supporting their teammates.  The event offers riders the opportunity to take part in Competitive Trail Riding (CTR), Jumping/Show Hunter, Dressage and Arena eventing.  Last year, we had record numbers entering, and this year numbers have grown by another 30-41% across both venues as many more students from intermediate and secondary schools across the motu compete in the four-day tournament.  (PHOTOS:  Grace Klava Photography)
