Secondary Schools Equestrian Cup
The New Zealand Secondary Schools Equestrian Cup [aka the Interschools] enable younger riders and their team mates to enjoy taking part in different equestrian disciplines. This hugely popular event is held in association with New Zealand Pony Club, Mounted Games and School Sports NZ (NZSSSC). It is held at the Fiber Fresh National Equestrian Centre, Taupō, and the Dunstan Horsefeeds National Equestrian Centre, McLeans Island, Christchurch. Dates for 2026 are Sunday 30 August till Thurs 4/Fri 5 September and the buzz has already begun.

Our “Why”
The NZ Secondary Schools Equestrian Cup [aka the Interschools] enables younger riders and their teammates to enjoy taking part in equestrian sports during NZ’s Tournament Week. Students from year seven to year 13 take part, entering via schools from Kaitaia to Southland in Dressage, Showjumping, Arena Eventing, Competitive Trail Riding and Mounted Games. For many rangitahi, this is the first – and sometimes the only – opportunity to connect with an organised event within the equestrian sport. Students get to try something new, in a safe and encouraging environment, while also supporting their teammates as they represent their school. Parents and caregivers share in the joys of their child’s experience, often learning something new. There is a keen focus on education and horse wellbeing is maintained throughout, highlighting the core Māori values of Manaakitanga, which translate to hospitality, kindness, generosity, and the process of showing respect and care for others, including equines. Local businesses get behind the event, either as sponsors or by taking part in the Trade Villages held in each centre.
