Press Release – Helmet Tagging
A new rule introduced into the ESNZ General Regulations will see all riders competing in ESNZ disciplines having to wear approved safety helmets from August 2017.
The ESNZ rule now states that all riders must wear an approved safety helmet in competition – the accepted safety standards can be found at all times on the ESNZ website. These helmets will be checked and tagged by stewards, gear checkers and officials throughout the 2016-17 season so riders are all ready by 1 August 2017.
ESNZ and New Zealand Pony Clubs Association have signed a joint memorandum of understanding to support the single tagging policy for New Zealand equestrian events and activities held by either of the two organisations.
As such, a joint ESNZ/NZPCA branded helmet tag has been produced. Once tagged, with the new red tag, a helmet will be allowed to be worn at all events and activities of either organisation. Helmets which have been tagged prior to this MoU under the existing NZPCA blue tag policy can be worn until 1 August 2017, at which time they will need to have a red tag or be replaced with a helmet that meets that approved safety standards.
Approved helmet standards
- Any helmets which are certified and only marked with the standard ES 1384 or BSEN 1384 can continue to be worn until 1 August 2017.
- Helmets which are certified and also marked with one of the other standards permissible by ESNZ/NZPCA (ASTM-F1163, PAS 015, Snell E2001, VG1 and AS/NZS 3838) should be tagged with one of the new RED hat tags before 1 August 2017.
- As of 1 August 2017 only helmets carrying RED tags or certified and marked with standards permissible by ESNZ will be permitted to be worn.
The move to approved safety standards is in recognition of the importance of safety in equestrian sport and is being taken seriously by ESNZ.
