Volunteer information for Organising Committees

These pages are put together for all ESNZ Organising Committees to help them to support and engage with volunteers and potential new volunteers

How to support and engage volunteers

Supporting and engaging volunteers is crucial for maintaining a motivated and effective team. Here are some strategies:

  1. Clear Communication: Establish clear channels of communication. Make sure volunteers know their roles, responsibilities, and how their efforts contribute to the overall mission.

  2. Training and Resources: Provide proper training and resources to help them feel confident and capable in their roles. This includes manuals (ESNZ Info sheets for volunteers), workshops, and ongoing support.

  3. Recognition and Appreciation: Regularly acknowledge and celebrate their contributions. This could be through thank-you notes, awards, or public recognition.  Even just providing lunch helps!

  4. Build a Community: Foster a sense of belonging by creating opportunities for volunteers to connect with each other. Social events, online groups, and team-building activities can help.

  5. Feedback and Involvement: Encourage volunteers to share their feedback and ideas. Involve them in decision-making processes to show that their opinions are valued.

  6. Flexibility: Be flexible with their schedules and roles. Understand that they are giving their time voluntarily and may have other commitments.

  7. Meaningful Work: Ensure that volunteers are engaged in tasks that are meaningful and aligned with their interests and skills. This can increase their sense of purpose and satisfaction.

  8. Supportive Environment: Create a positive and supportive environment where volunteers feel respected and valued. Address any concerns promptly and fairly.

  9. Personal Development: Offer opportunities for personal and professional growth. This could include skill-building workshops, leadership roles, or mentoring programs.

  10. Regular Check-ins: Have regular check-ins to discuss their experiences, provide support, and address any issues they may have.

Implementing these strategies can help create a motivated and engaged volunteer team that is dedicated to your cause.
