Katie Laurie and her homebred Django II have this morning placed second in the CSI5* 1.60m Grand Prix at Spruce Meadows. Run in horrendous conditions, the 39-strong field wat whittled to 24 after two eliminations, five retirements and eight withdrawals.

However, Katie and her 15-year-old New Zealand warmblood – who is out of her father Jeff’s star jumper Flower Power – were all clear in the opening round. Richard Vogel (GER) and Gangster Montdesir were the only other combination to join them for the jump-off.

Katie and Django had an early in their 52.61 second round, opening the door for Richard who came home clear in 52.74.

“I am so excited,” said Katie. “He is feeling so good. The conditions were tough out there but Django is so scopey and brave, and he really loves these big grass rings. The ground was amazing considering the amount of rain. I just couldn’t be happier and so good to have (long-time supporters and owners) Mike and Carissa (McCall) over here too.”

Katie and Django are having a stellar run, having jumped three Grand Prix clear rounds this year for a first, second and third at CSI5* Spruce and CSI4* Thunderbird. This achievement now sees the pair meet the criteria for the High Performance Jumping Squad being the second combination to be named on squad in the last week.
