The last show of the season was held at the Fiber Fresh Taupo NEC at the weekend, and with competitors travelling from far and wide to grab the last of the series points up for offer, some fantastic competition was had.

Not only was Edward Bullock course designing over the weekend, but he also pulled his biggest win to date out the bag when his clear second round in the Premier League Grand Prix saw him ride Kiwi Sundance to victory. Tara Gower rode Riverhills Legend to second place, picking up enough points to boost her into fourth place on the series leaderboard. Sofia Williams completed her spectacular season on Grassendale Enzo with a third place.

The AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix came right down to the wire, in both the series and the class. Lottie Bull and Daniella Jelliman went head to head in the jump off, as they have done so many times before this season. First out on Tallyho Scoundrel, Daniella produced a smart round that looked to be good enough, but Lottie had other ideas, and shaved nearly a second off the leading time to take out both the class and the series on TCG Centadel.

Kylee McCambridge had a great weekend, winning the NZPH Seven Year Old Breeding Series final class with the only clear on Waitangi Starlink (Hector van D’Abdijhoeve x Waitangi Cloud/ Cardento) and the Property Brokers Grand Prix on Waitangi TikTok with the fastest double clear. All credit to Jocelyn Bayly for breeding both horses, and Kylee for producing them.

Five combinations contested the jump off in the Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider, and Kirsten Worker, riding Lilah, held her nerve to finish at the top of leaderboard which also meant she took out the series. Jeremy Clark rode Dynavyte Corysian Ego Z to second place and Ella Davison rounded out the podium on Hilux Xtreme.

The three riders in the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider jump off all gave it their best shot, Adison Hall had the fastest time on Waitangi Connection, but a rail down saw her finish in third place. Jessica Hore was all clear on Beaumont Cassanova in 37.83, but she couldn’t quite catch Cameron Taylor who stopped the clock in 37.34 to take out the class on Truman V.

The Main-Events Tertiary Series may have only had a small number of participants, but it was thrilling right until the end. The two ladies that were sitting in equal place on the series leaderboard faced off in the jump off, and with drop scores coming in to play, it wasn’t as simple as the winner takes all. Elyza McDonald jumped a speedy clear on De Silver Lining, looking like she had done enough to win the class, but Leah Harre knocked nearly two seconds off her time to win the class on Kaipara Hold Up. A result that saw both competitors finish on equal points in the series.

Jo Ferguson jumped the only double clear in the NZTR TiES Futurity to crown her as the North Island Champion aboard the Group 1 winner, On The Rocks (Alamosa x Cold Shoulder/Volksraad, bred by WJ Gleeson).  Jo is a harness racing trainer and thoroughbred enthusiast, running a busy training and breaking in stable alongside her husband. As well as parenting a young child, she also is a great social media communicator (Track Chat) and does lots of comms for Cambridge and Auckland trotting clubs and her story is a great example of resilience, determination, learning, planning, and focus. After attending the TiES final at HOY last year, things didn’t go to plan, but she went home, regrouped, planned, replanned, told herself she was going to come back and win it next year, and made it happen! But it wasn’t all smooth sailing, with the cancellation of HOY, the rescheduling of the TiES final meant that it clashed with the Night of Champions, the biggest harness racing meeting of the year at Cambridge and so Jo had a decision to make!

“This is the last year Smudge (On The Rocks) is eligible (for the TiES Futurity), so I had to give it a go. I did get serious FOMO, but I watched the Night of Champions on my phone in the back of the horse float! I’m so proud of Smudge, he is a lovely horse and lots of the racing community are very connected to him. He jumped fantastic and clear all weekend, so it’s great to give him the win”.

Eighteen thoroughbreds were competing at the show, and De Silver Lining (Roc De Cambes x Courtney/ Heroicity, bred by AO & LR Murray), ridden by Elyza McDonald accumulated the most points to be awarded the NZTR Best Performed Thoroughbred.
