Cumulus ECPH may have been a tricky wee filly to start, but she’s quickly risen to the top, winning the NZ Warmblood Association Six-Year-Old Championship at the YHS.

Rider Logan Massie (Dannevirke) who co-owns the horse with her breeders ECPH says he was chuffed to win so well. They had three rails in hand heading into the final round so he felt he could relax a bit. “I knew I was sitting on a nice horse and it all went to plan,” he said. “It’s been a good show for us.”

Logan also won the Four-Year-Old Championship, riding Phoenix ECPH.

Cumulus, who is known as Rita at home and shamelessly the favourite of Logan’s wife Alexa, had been “naughty” to break in as a three-year-old. “She was meant to be sold a few times but I could never get her broken in in time for the auctions.”

But everything changed when she was under saddle. “I love her attitude and ability to jump under pressure,” says Logan. “She is a bit bullish and has a lot of blood so three days of jumping suited her. Her best jumping was on the third day.”

She’s a very green six-year-old but one Logan says certainly has an international career ahead of her.

“We’ve always known she is quite special so have just been quietly chipping away with her. This show was a goal for her this season.”

The mare will have a couple of weeks off before working up to Takapoto in February.

Twenty-one started the six-year-old champs on the opening day of competition, with 14 coming through to the final today. Just Logan with Cumulus and Carissa McCall (Kumeu) aboard Churro Ego Z were clear.

Logan ended up with four faults but it was still enough for him to take the win without having to jump off. A clutch of 12 faulters filled the next four places.

The style prize went to Oliver Edgecombe (Waipukurau) aboard Carlo1.
