Many flocked to the west coast of the North Island for a double helping of series points at the Egmont A&P Show and the Greymouth Petroleum Taranaki Equestrian Spring Spectacular, and it did not disappoint. With three huge days of jumping, the Taranaki committee put on a spectacular show that was doused in sunshine, leaving a smile on the faces of all that attended.

Sophie Shines at Egmont

Sophie Scott continued her good form with a win in the Property Brokers Grand Prix on Equine America Benrose Stellar with a double clear in 40.42. Sophie also finished third on Waitangi Skynet with a time of 41.45. Squeezing in-between was Julie Davey riding LT Holst Freda, who finished hot on Sophie’s heals with their time of 40.85. It was a competitive class, with six combinations making it through to the jump off, five of which produced a double clear.

The FMG Young Rider brought another thrilling jump off with the top three all going double clear. Chloe Armstrong aboard Benrose Casino ECPH was the fastest of them all, but only just! She finished her round in 39.86, just a whisker ahead of Kimberly Carrington riding Double J Saga, who stopped the clock in 39.89! Sophia Blackbourn came in third place on LT Holst Zalato Blue with their time of 41.12.

Five combinations headed into the jump off in The Brave Pants Company Pro Am, but it was only Kristi Salonius on MF Starbound that left all the rails standing to take the win. The Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider suffered the same fate, with Marcus Rose on Royal Otis producing the sole double clear, and Daniella Jelliman was the only one to jump a clear round in the AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix to take yet another win on Tallyho Scoundrel.

Charlotte Scott certainly didn’t head into the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider jump off in a leisurely way, she rode Leisure Time Larry to victory finishing just ahead of Henry Martin riding Kiwi Strike.

While Peita Milne had a good win in the NZPH Seven Year Old Breeding Series, where she jumped the sole clear round on Karisma HSH, (Indoctro x Daimante HSH/ Diarado, bred by Hokonui Sport Horses), the Five and Six Year Old classes saw a flurry of clears, that saw three share the prize pool in each.

In the East Coast Performance Horses Five Year Old Breeding Series, it was a good day for the series sponsor with two of their home bred horses finishing in the winner’s circle. Vicki Prendergast rode Cardinal ECPH (Carrera VDL x Zapata ECPH/ Zirocco Blue VDL), and Luce Williams rode Jingo ECPH (Jardonnay VDL x Cincinnati ECPH/ Cassiano). Lucy Fell joined them on top of the podium with her homebred, Away Laughing (Eden du Rouet x Enja MVNZ/ Cassini II).

The ECPH bred horses continued to bring their breeders success in the New Zealand Warmblood Association Six Year Old Breeding Series, with Camaro ECPH (Candyman GNZ x Isabella SL/ Indoctro), ridden by Henry Martin and Cumulus ECPH (Carrera VDL x Delage ECPH/ Dallas VDL), ridden by Logan Massie, both jumping double clear. Chloe Armstong joined the boys at the top of the leaderboard, riding the Wendy Jacobs bred Double J Celine (ES Kalaska x Double J Whitney/ Repicharge).

The Greymouth Petroleum Taranaki Equestrian Spring Spectacular brought another day of thrilling competition in the Taranaki sunshine, and the riders put on a display in the Property Brokers Grand Prix, locally supported by Greymouth Petroleum. Six combinations battled it out for the top spot, and with four jumping a second clear, it was a race against the clock. In the end, it was Jake Lambert aboard Takapoto Alaid de Chez Nous who were the quickest, a good day for the Takapoto team, as Jake also won the Mini Prix on Takapoto Anouk G Z. Not far behind Alaid de Chez Nous, was Logan Massie riding Adele 13 who finished in second place, and Sofia Williams on Grassendale Enzo rounded out the podium.

The Brave Pants Company Pro Am, locally supported by Agtrans, and the NZPH 7 Year Old Breeding Series each saw one clear in the first round. Deanika Vink rode Maddox DHU to victory in the Pro Am, and Sarah West was the victor in the Seven Year Olds on Schecter (Hector van d’Abdijhoeve x Sofee/Powerfee, bred by Vicki Prendergast).

The Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider saw seven combinations head into the second round, with two jumping another flawless round. Hannah Roil finished on top of the leaderboard with Grassendale Xtreme in a time of 34.09, and Lottie Bull coming in a fraction behind on Self Portrait in 35.09.

The Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider, locally supported by JVK Contracting Ltd, also saw seven combinations come back for the jump off. Marcus Rose and Royal Otis kept up their good form with another double clear, and a time of 41.85 that was good enough for second place. The AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix, locally supported by Hanover Plumbing, saw two four faulters from the first round contest the jump off. Both picked up another four faults in the jump off, but with Lottie Bull on TCG Centadel just slipping over the time allowed and adding a time fault to their total, the win went to Tessa Moffett riding Ricky Baker II.

It was very exciting to see so many double clears coming through the Young Horse classes. The East Coast Performance Horses Five Year Old Breeding Series saw a whopping seven combinations keep a clean sheet to take equal first place.

  • Daniel Webb riding his homebred WSJ Finale (WSJ Arapaho x Applause/ Anamour).
  • Robert Steele riding Diamond Blue (ES Diamant B x Delta Blue/ Littorio) .
  • Vicki Prendergast riding Cardinal ECPH (Carrera VDL x Zapata ECPH/ Zirocco Blue VDL, bred by East Coast Performance Horses), and her homebred Salvador C (Carrera VDL x Sofee/Powerfee).
  • Luce Williams riding Jingo ECPH (Jardonnay VDL x Cincinnati ECPH/ Cassiano, bred by East Coast Performance Horses).
  • Kimberly Carrington riding Game Ready (Eurosport Diamant B x Waitangi Game On/ Internet, bred by Debbie Forman).
  • Lucy Fell riding her homebred Away Laughing (Eden du Rouet x Enja MVNZ/ Cassini II).

Three combinations took home maximum points in the New Zealand Warmblood Association Six Year Old Breeding Series. Cumulus ECPH (Carrera VDL x Delage ECPH/ Dallas VDL, bred by East Coast Performance Horses), picked up her second win of the weekend, with Logan Massie in the saddle. Joining Logan at the front of the pack was Robert Seele riding his homebred Ginny (Centarion x Affinity/Billy’s Dream), and Julianna Revfeim riding Coruba GNZ (Pennsylvania x Brie/ Lansing, bred by the Golden Grove Stud).

Needless to say, the hardworking Taranaki committee were thrilled with how their show ran:

“The Taranaki Equestrian Jumping Grand Prix Show and the Egmont A&P Show delivered a wonderful weekend of show jumping and show hunter, highlighted by beautiful weather and an immaculate grass jumping surface that provided excellent footing for both horses and riders. We had lots of quality jumping over well designed courses and saw some very competitive jump offs in all of the ESNZ series classes. Thank you to the sponsors, officials, volunteers and riders who all came to support our show and a special mention to New Zealand Community Trust, Toi Foundation and Aotearoa Gaming Trust who help keep the show jumping alive in Taranaki.”
