Julie Davey and LT Holst Freda underlined their class today, riding off with the win in the ClipMyHorseTV FEI Jumping World Cup Qualifier at Taupo with the only double clear of the class.

It was the combination’s first World Cup win in New Zealand, despite winning the series last season. They did have a win in the Australian League earlier this year.

Today it was a compact start list, but Australian course designer Mark Atkins produced a challenging enough track that called for brave decisions and forward riding in the indoor arena at the Fiber Fresh National Equestrian Centre.

The only clears in the whole class came from Julie and Freda, with Sophie Scott (Palmerston North) finishing on eight faults apiece with Equine America Benrose Stellar and Normandy GHP for second and third respectively.

The opening round saw three on four faults and two on eight with the second producing four four-fault rounds but with fault accumulative rails had to stay up.

In the second round, Sophie and Stellar were carrying four and needed a clear to put the pressure on Julie who was to follow, and while their time was the fastest of the round, a brick at the last put paid to any victory.

Julie’s win keeps her at the top of the leaderboard, but Sophie is breathing down her neck. The two women are both very accomplished riders, fiercely competitive and hugely respectful of each other.

“I am very happy with Freda,” said Julie. “I jumped her three days, which is a bit different for us and you always hope it is the right decision when you do that, but she had been a bit fresh.

“It was nice to have a different course designer. He (Mark) really made you think, and you really have had to concentrate the whole way around.”

As Julie came out of the ring after the second round a young fan approached her and gave her a tiny polaroid of Freda. “It was a really sweet thing to do. I am very superstitious so I will be keeping that as my lucky charm.”

Julie says she’s just taking each show as it comes as she builds towards the New Zealand World Cup League final in January.

The last qualifier of the New Zealand league is at the Central and Southern Hawke’s Bay Showjumping and Show Hunter Championships at Dannevirke (January 10) then it is on to the Waitemata Premier Jumping Festival at Woodhill Sands (January 18) for the final.

The best four of the five rounds count towards each rider’s final tally.

The winner of the New Zealand series has the opportunity to travel to the world final in Fort Worth, Texas in April.
