It’s been a cracker of a weekend for top New Zealand eventers competing in Ireland and Scotland with wins for Olympians Caroline Powell and Jonelle Price as well as Amanda Goldsbury.

Caroline Powell dominated the top classes at the Lisgarvan House International Horse Trials in Ireland, winning both the CCI4*-L and CCI3*-L on her horses Tik Tok (owned by Jo West) and Greenacres Special Touch (owned by Chris Mann). Amanda Goldsbury was first and third with Cooley Clarissma (owned by Cooley Farm) and KHH Romanov Park (owned by Cooley Farm) in the CCI2*-L, won the CCI2*-S aboard Call it Cooley (owned by Cooley Farm) and also took out the CCIYH2* for six and seven-year-olds on Touch of Cooley (owned by Cooley Farm) .

Caroline led from the get-go in the CCI4*-L, scoring 30.3 penalty points in her dressage with Tik Tok, adding 5.2 time in the cross county and nothing in the showjumping for a final tally of 35.5.

In the CCI3*-L she led the dressage with Rathnageera River on 30.4 with Greenacres Special Touch in second on 30.9, adding 7.6 in the cross country with Special Touch to remain in second behind Elizabeth Power (IRL) and Balladeer Clintender on 36.9 after a costly cross country on Rathnageera River popped him out of contention. But a perfect showjumping round from Special Touch saw them take the win on 38.5, comfortably ahead of Elizabeth in second on 48.9.

“I couldn’t be happier,” said Caroline. “Both are first-timers and new to the whole thing. Tik Tok is just nine and new to this level. He has only just stepped up but has done really well.” He was a bit of a “weirdo” but had was a “pretty consistent solid horse who is lovely”.

The 3* winner Special Touch is a nephew of Caroline’s 5* winner Greenacres Special Cavalier. “It was our first time to Lisgarvan and we certainly hope to be back again.”

Amanda led from the start in 23-strong the CCI2*-L aboard Cooley Clarissma, finishing on 26.1 penalty points with her third place getter KHH Romanov Park on 29.5. It was a similar story in the CCI2*-S with Call it Cooley who finished on his dressage score of 29.5 in the 29-strong class. She too had plenty of good to say about the event and was delighted with the efforts of her team.

Meanwhile in Scotland at the Scone Palace International, Jonelle Price and Capitaine de Hus Z (owned by David & Karie Thomson) won the CCI4*-L with Abigail Long aboard Henton Audacious fourth and Jonelle sixth with Chilli’s Midnight Star. Samantha Lissington and Quantas R were sixth in the CCI4*-S.

Jonelle led from the start in the 43-strong CCI4*-L, adding 2.4 in the cross country and 0.4 in the showjumping for a final score of 31.2 penalty points. The cross country was hugely influential in the class, with 13 combinations going by the wayside either retiring or being eliminated.

“I was delighted with him across country, despite being a few seconds over,” said Jonelle. “He jumped super all the way around, though he got a little strong coming home, but that’s the nature of the beast. I was able to manage him and stay better on the clock. He’s a good jumper and coming into the showjumping ring on something like him is a nice feeling. Scone Palace has very much been the focus for him, but we’ll probably look for a five-star next.”
