Winner: Double J Typhoon
Double J Typhoon is more like a family pet than a feisty stallion, but don’t be fooled, he’s super talented too.
In the hands of 20-year-old Kimberley Carrington, Double J Typhoon edged out Logan Massie’s Bravado Ego Z and Vicki Wilson’s Daminos TWS.
Breeder Wendy Jacobs is very proud of her daughter and Typhoon who is by Euro Sport Centavos and out of her very handy amateur showjumper Double J Breeze.
“I am pleased with how he has stepped up to Grand Prix level really well – he’s certainly performed well this season.”
Nine-year-old Typhoon and Kim were third on debut in the Premier League at the North Island Champs, have been very consistent at 1.4m level, handy in the Young Rider and fifth in the Lady Rider of the Year.
“He has given us some real thrills,” says Wendy. “I am very proud with how he has jumped. A lot of credit must go to Logan (Massie) too – he has really helped her with her riding and Typhoon and is a very good mentor.”
Typhoon’s mum Breeze is the foundation mare of the Double J Stud and the daughter of French Kiss who was the first horse Wendy bought when she left school. “I competed her and then Vaughn Jefferis bought her before she went on to compete with Dinah Bowie.”
Breeze is still in the paddock at home. She’s no longer breeding but has 14 grandchildren on their Takapau farm and ‘mum’ to many.
“Typhoon was a little sensitive to break in but as soon as he got used to someone on his back he has been a pleasure. He is very soft and so affectionate,” says Wendy, “and loves company. When Kim is busy with work or short on time I hack him at home – he is one of my favourites to ride. He’s just a really nice and easy horse to have around.”
Wendy says as soon as she saw Centavos she liked him. “He is a beautiful stallion and we have used him a lot because he works very well over our mares. Some stallions just seem to work over your type of mares.”
Typhoon also has some promising progeny on the ground including Double J Britz, Double J Phyllis and Claire Wilson’s Pippin. “He’s got some really nice horses on the ground already.”
