It was a big weekend with the New Zealand FEI World Cup Final Qualifiers coming to a head, and it did not disappoint! You can read more on Sophie Scott’s fantastic win as well as Julie Davey’s series win HERE . But, we are going to focus on the other series classes that took place over the weekend.
As well as the NZ World Cup Final, the Waitemata Archibald & Shorter North Shore show also hosted a variety of other series classes. Kicking off the weekend was The Brave Pants Company Pro-Am – locally supported by Burmester Realty, where six combinations made it into the jump off with three going on to jump another clear round. The fastest of those was Paula Mussen and Deja Vu NZPH. The AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix – locally supported by GJ Gardner Homes – saw two from four keep a clean set of heels with Adison Hall and Flaxhill La Rocco just edging out Sofia WIlliams on Buzzie Bees Max who finished in 41.20 & 41.57 respectively.
She may not have had the fastest time in the jump off, but being the only one to keep all the rails up after both rounds gave the win to Aimee Collinson and Be Mine NZPH in the FMG Young Rider – locally supported by More Mag. Meg Bisset and Emmaville Dontago and Aliyah Berry on Neo had a quicker time, but a rail falling for both left them in second and third place. The Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider – locally supported by Torque Digital – kept up a similar theme with Sofia Williams (Off The Cuff) and Matt Taylor (Starlight Dalaman) clocking the fastest time around the jump off, but a rail apiece left them in third and fourth place, behind Matisse Masterson (Jay Z GNZ) and Liv Teixeira (Balmoral Candyapple I GNZ) who both jumped a double clear. Matisse stopped the clock in 39.37, with Liv slightly behind in 42.82.
In the Main-Events Tertiary Series, Victoria Boot and Genius were the best of a small bunch, finishing just ahead of Maddison Greatorex and Connoray.
The Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider – locally supported by Kristin Cato – brought on a flurry of clears, with seven going forward to the jump off. Josh Bremner was the fastest of the five that jumped another clear round, picking up yet another win aboard LT Holst Francis.
Speaking of clear rounds, the young horses didn’t disappoint, especially in the East Coast Performance Horses 5 Year Old Breeding Series, where five combinations shared first prize.
It was an especially good day for Carissa McCall who rode away with two of these placings. She executed two perfect rounds on both the Tulara Warmbloods bred HP Tulara Checkmate (Checkter x Tulara Companion/ Companiero) and the Ego Summersea bred Churro Ego Z (Carthago Z x Popsicle Ego Z/Parco).
Joining Carissa was Jaime Campbell-Ward with the Amy Gravett owned Belmont As You Wish (Euro Sport Centavos x Belmont Wunderbar/ Belmont Golden Boy – bred by Sandy Fryatt), Michelle Wakeling and her homebred BMW Candykane (Candyman GNZ x Weiti Triumph/ Weiti Handy Andy), and Jesse Linton & Nicola Smith’s Cologne (Contendro I x Haupouri Verdant Blue NZPH/ Mr Blue).
The New Zealand Warmblood Association 6 Year Old Breeding Series – locally supported by Copilot Equine – wasn’t quite so forthcoming with the clears. Four combinations left all the rails standing in the first round, but it was only Julie Davey and the Ewen Mackintosh bred LT Holst Elle Star (Big Star x LT Holst Carla/Calato) that could go on to jump another clear.
Takapoto Equestrian had a good day in the NZPH & A1 Equine Reproduction 7 Year Old Breeding Series, with two of their homebreds landing on the podium – both of which are out of Sam McIntosh’s former World Cup horse, Claire (Chasseur I). Tyla Hackett and Takapoto Saffron, who is by Check In, were first out to contest the shortened track and set the standard in 39.54 which ended up being good enough for third place. Jake Lambert and Takapoto Darius, who is by Cassiano, were last to go and flew around the course to take the win, just beating Samantha Van Lierde on Iconic NZPH (Vleut x Emilie NZPH/Kannan).
For those that didn’t make the trip north to Woodhill, there was plenty more going on around the country. Starting with the Tremain’s Horowhenua AP&I Show. Molly Presling had a fantastic weekend, picking up the quinella in the AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix. Aboard both ponies, she left all the jumps standing, but picked up three time faults. CS Millificent was just a touch quicker to finish in the top spot, with Cee Cee just behind in second place. Isla Bowley and Foxdens Merlot rounded out the podium with their four fault round.
The FMG Young Rider saw the battle of the Charlottes! Being the only two to go clear in the jump off, it came down to time. Charlotte Conder and Kiwi Bonus were the clear winners with their time of 39.90, finishing nearly five seconds clear of Charlotte Scott and Double J Wilbur.
Chloe Armstrong aboard Pythia were the quickest double clear of two in a four way jump off to ride away as the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider Champion. Leah Harrie and Kaipara Hold Up also left all the sticks up for second place.
The Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider saw four head into the jump off battlefield, none of which could give a repeat performance. All had just the one rail down of which Jillian Watson and OhMyHolly were the quickest to run away with the win.
Down in the South Island, the mainlanders flocked to the South Canterbury/North Otago Summer Classic. Zara Hazledine picked up another AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix win – this time locally supported by Pembroke Accounting Solutions. The two combinations who entered the jump off both picked up four faults, with Zara and Redcliffs Bill just edging out Molly Smith and Vapour Trail NZPH. The Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider – locally supported by PL Performance Horses – also saw two clears from the first round go on to pick up four faults in the jump off. Alysha Verrall and Indian Burt were the quickest of these to take home the win.
The Mainland Coachwork Junior rider saw two double clears come from Poppy Slater and Yalambi Cassini Rosso and Cara Quinn on Haupouri Dakota NZPH who finished in first and second place respectively. The Brave Pants Company Pro Am also saw two double clears. This class was locally supported by Animal Therapeutics and the win went to Kate Houston and Cera Chanel, with Zoe Shore aboard Quainton Labyrinth in second place. Two double clears appeared to be the trend, as this was the same occurrence in the FMG Young Rider – locally supported by River Gorge Cottages, Sonya Bennison and MF Lexicon finished in first place ahead of Summer Borrie on Pure Cascade.
Determined not to be the bridesmaid again, Summer Borrie went one better in the East Coast Performance Horses 5 Year Old Breeding Series, this time aboard the Warwick & Fraser Tombleson bred Aerial’s Airline Alley (Chacco Silver x Maria/ Ngahiwi One Eye). Joining her in first place was Gayle Baker and Larnaca (Remi Lion King x Lorelei/Limonit – bred by Kaaron Meares).
Johanna Wylaars shone like the bright star she is in the other young horse classes, where she jumped the sole double clear in the New Zealand Warmblood Association 6 Year Old Breeding Series on the Lily Sutherland bred Demietta (Daminos x Octavia Queen/ Don Quattro) and also took out the NZPH & A1 Equine Reproduction 7 Year Old Breeding Series aboard the Amberley House bred AH California Dreaming (Euro Sport Centavos x Lilliana/Littorio).
The TiES Futurity Series belonged to Lauren Enright who not only won the class on The Sloaney Pony, but also finished in fourth place on Vapor Trail and in sixth place on Gee Whiz Joey, with all jumping double clear. Tamara Silcock and Belle’s Big Boy came in second and Margaret Ridley and Rockfort in third.
