Dylan Burton & Kenny G MS – Winners of the FMG Young Rider at Taupo World Cup Classic – Photo by Libby Law Photography
As we moved into the yuletide month, the Taupo World Cup Classic put on a show and with the indoor filled with festive cheer, Christmas certainly came early for some.
Luke Dee celebrated a super FEI World cup win on his and Fiona Hall’s Gangster WW, you can read about that here: https://www.nzequestrian.org.nz/2024/11/gangster-rules-at-taupo-world-cup/ And Dylan Burton rode to victory in yet another FMG Young Rider on Kenny G MS, their third in a row. Three combinations went through to the jump off and with all three taking just one rail, it came down to who was the quickest, of which Dylan’s time of 40.60 could not be beaten.
Sofia Williams was once again on fine form, picking up another AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix win with Sitarski. She contested the jump off alongside Isla Bowley and Foxdens Merlot with both picking up four faults. Sofia was the quickest of the two in 39.21.
Nicholas Grant made his trip up from the mainland well worth it by picking up a solid win in The Brave Pants Company Pro-Am. Aboard Goldfinch GNZ, he was first to go in a four horse jump off and they set a smart time with all the jumps intact, a feat that no other could do.
Another four horse jump off was seen in the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider where Emily Oliver and Campari jumped the only double clear. Despite having a faster time, Matisse Masterson and Jay-Z GNZ lowered one rail to settle for second place.

The Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider brought a fast and furious jump off to the spectators, with five combinations going on to jump a second clear round. Josh Bremner aboard LT Holst Francis certainly left it all in the ring and rode away with the victory in 39.01.
Jaime Campbell and the Paula Brocklehurst owned and bred Parisian Affair (Euro Sport Centavos x Total Eclipse/John) jumped the only clear in the NZPH & A1 Equine Reproduction 7 Year Old Breeding Series, as did Fraser Tombleson on his father Warwick’s bred Mr Shelby (Euro Sport Diamant B x Mea I/Ngahiwi One Eye) in the East Coast Performance Horses 5 Year Old Breeding Series.
The NZ Warmblood Association 6 Year Old Breeding Series saw no less than five combinations jumping double clear to share the first prize.
- Jaime Campbell picked up her second age group win on Silver Scotsman, (Chacco Silver x Recherche/Columbia – bred by Kim Campbell & Sandra Stowell).
- Vicki Wilson and her homebred Dakota VWNZ (Daminos x Empress VWNZ/ Carrado MVNZ).
- Adison Hall and the Jocelyn Bayly bred Waitangi Connection, (Capitano GNZ x Waitangi Spysweeper/Internet).
- Maddison Greatorex and Chacco Sylvia SF, (Chacco Silver x Rakaunui Gazzelle/ Loewenherz – bred by Nikita Seafort O’Donnell).
- Oliver Croucher and Jackpot NZPH, (Ulhan du Temple x Fantasia NZPH/Non Plus Ultra).
Meanwhile, down south, South Canterbury/North Otago hosted their Championship show with a flurry of series classes. Anna Nalder and Letano jumped the sole double clear in 51.38 in the FMG Young Rider – locally supported by River Gorge Cottages. Emma Gillies sped around on Lafayet Ego Z some ten seconds quicker in 40.63, but with one rail falling from its cups, they had to settle for second place.
Kimberleigh McCabe and Prince of Brooks were the only ones to jump a clear round in a four fault jump off in the FMG Young Rider – locally supported by Animal Therapeutics. The Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider and the AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix – both locally supported by Pembroke Accounting Solution – were both won with a solo clear round. The former coming from Jessica Hore and Global PH Mylorde, and the latter by Sophie Fountain on Benrose Starlight.
As they often do, the amateurs put on a display in the Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider – locally supported by PL Performance Horses – with five combinations going clear in a six horse jump off. Maddison Thompson carried on her good form from a couple of weeks ago, and was the fastest to stop the clock, this time aboard Quincey Mae.
Last year’s series winner picked up where she left off, Hanna Lowe and Double J Jac O’Malley finished on top of the leaderboard in the Main-Events Tertiary Series.
The Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider went all American on us at the Stratford A&P Show, with Jon Smyth taking the win on TH Tennessee Boy, narrowly beating Charlotte Mitchell and Tennessee Waltz. Jill Watson came in third on OhMyHolly.
