Julie Davey and LT Holst Freda – Winners of the Property Brokers Horse Grand Prix at Central Hawkes Bay A&P – Photo by Mary Lloyd

The Central Hawkes Bay A&P, held at Waipukurau, kickstarted this weekend’s competition, and whilst travelling competitors were greeted with a thunderstorm that the local farmers were certainly grateful for, the clouds cleared and the sunshine made for a stunning two days of jumping.

Julie Davey’s time in Australia certainly seems to be paying in dividends as she took out the Property Brokers Grand Prix, locally sponsored by Central Natives, with the fantastic LT Holst Freda, finishing just ahead of Oliver Edgecombe aboard Takapoto Tinka in a two way jump off.

“I just went for a steady clear, with a big gap between Waikato and Taupo World Cups, I need to keep Freda’s fitness up and it was a great run to help with that. The show was a bit more relaxed with two rings and the ground was perfect.”

Isla Bowley won the AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix, locally sponsored by Wai-tawaka Earthmoving, by jumping the only clear aboard Foxdens Merlot. Cindy Kershaw and Kiwi Vision topped The Brave Pants Company Pro-Am, locally supported by Competitive Jumpers in exactly the same style.

Kaleigh Kent and the wonderful Double J Sponge Bob Square Pants picked up their second win in a row in the Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider – locally supported by Waikare Station – narrowly beating Nigel Horten on Mandalay Cove, with John Maclennan and Tolley finishing in third place.

Lottie Bull and Self Portrait just snuck ahead of Elyza McDonald on Pure Difference in the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider supported by ICW Farrier Services, to ride home with the win.

Another exciting jump off came in the FMG Young Rider, supported by Kelso Genetics, with all the double clears finishing within one second! Bayly Jacobs and Gabriel HH headed the field in 36.37, second was Elyza McDonald and De Silver Lining just a whisker away in 36.40. Local girl Annie Moffett on Samantha the Dachshund stopped the timers in 36.43 for third and Penny Borthwick aboard Nikama MVNZ picked up fourth place in 36.73. It doesn’t get more exciting than that!!

Vania Mason secured her win in the NZ Warmblood Association 6 Year Old Breeding Series, supported by C&S HB Jumping Group, by jumping the only double clear on the Laura McGregor bred Pure Silhouette (Chacco Silver MS x Pure Pink/ Euro Sport Centavos). They also picked up the style prize.

Four combinations celebrated first place in the East Coast Performance Horses 5 Year Old Breeding Series, supported by Waikare Station. Claire Wilson had a good day with her homebred McMillans Pippin (Double J Typhoon x The Big Apple/Corlando) jumping double clear, as well as the Kahu Piripi bred McMillans Rhubarb (Tane x Tip/Flags).  Oliver Edgecombe and Double J Celine (Euro Sport Kalaska x Double J Whitney/Double J Repicharge) and Fraser Tombleson on Mr Shelby (Euro Sport Diamant B x Mea I/Ngahiwi One Eye) followed suit to share the win.

Wanganui A&P

Wanganui A&P continued into the weekend, and Sophie Scott picked up yet another Property Brokers Grand Prix win, however, this time it was on Glenbrooke Rich as Roses in the locally sponsored CJ Newland Logging class. Only two contended the jump off, and whilst Daniel Webb and WSJ Centaur had the faster time, four faults relegated them to a worthy second place.

“Absolutely over the moon to have won the Grand Prix on Ritchie. It’s been 2.5 years since our last Grand Prix start, so I was very excited to have his first win back at this level. He didn’t miss a beat and produced a beautiful double clear. Wanganui put on a fantastic show”.

Double clears came thick and fast in the AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix, locally sponsored by Integrity Motors, with Tessa Harrie and Tallyho Rainman being the faster of the two to take the win. The double clear trend continued across a number of the series classes. The Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider, locally sponsored by Wanganui Farm Supplies, saw two combinations pull a double clear out of the bag – Ella Easton and A+P Firenze stopped the clock in 49.26, with Charlotte Scott on Double J Wilbur not far behind in 52.64. The Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider, locally sponsored by Keown Honda, saw a five way jump off where the times could not have been tighter. Floss Hinton and Dancing Queen MW were the fastest through the flags in 44.75, second place went to Hayley Fraser and Silverstar in 44.85 and Jo Andrews on Coco Petite completed the podium in 45.82.

Lucy Fell is certainly a lady on a roll at the moment, aboard the feisty Faratona STS.  They picked up their third win on the bounce in The Brave Pants Company Pro Am Rider – this time locally supported by Wanganui Towing.

“I’ll certainly enjoy this winning feeling while it lasts. Tona has always loved Wanganui and has not been beaten there since before 2019. This is our tenth season together so we know each other incredibly well, and she’s done many miles now – if she’s on form, I can almost switch on autopilot! Huge thanks to Paddy Borthwick for the magnum of wine and The Brave Pants Company for the series sponsorship”.

Charlotte Conder and Kiwi Bonus’ four fault effort was good enough to land them the win in the FMG Young Rider, sponsored by Palamountains.

Debbie Jenkins was thrilled with how the weekend went – “The show was a great success, and the weather held off for the best part. We were lucky to be up on competitor numbers this time, and we had great sponsors and prizes.  We were lucky enough to get Luke from EAC Animal Care to provide a rider bag for everyone. Our local Mayor, Andrew Tripe also joined in on the action and awarded a few ribbons.  All in all a successful show with a very soggy pack up!”

Woodhill Sands

As we are fortunate to do most weekends, we now head to Woodhill Sands for the Fiber Fresh Grand Prix Show.

Laura Inkster and the striking grey Rodrigo MVNZ produced the only double clear to safely confirm their win in the Property Brokers Horse Grand Prix, sponsored by Fiber Fresh. Laura had a great show with her other horses also performing well. The stunning Salut MVNZ placed third in his first 1.30-1.35m start and the Carissa McCall owned HP Tulara Checkmate took out the East Coast Performance Horses 5 Year Old Breeding Series, locally sponsored by Shelley Bridgeman.

“I’m so pleased with Basil, he felt great jumping double clear out on the grass ring. It’s only his second Grand Prix start in his career. Huge thanks to Mike and Carissa McCall and my family and friends for all their support. Also thanks to Woodhill Sands and sponsors for running an awesome show”.

In what looked to be a tough track, Adison Hall and Flaxhill La Rocco’s eight faults were good enough to secure them the win in the AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix, locally sponsored by GJ Gardner Homes. The new combination of Aimee Collinson and Be Mine NZPH jumped the only double clear to take out the FMG Young Rider, supported by Fiber Fresh. In exactly the same fashion, Zara Main on Frankton ZON won the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider, sponsored by Veterinary Associates Equine.

Paula Mussen and Deja Vu NZPH were the fastest of two double clears to win The Brave Pants Company Pro-Am – locally supported by GJ Gardner Homes. The Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider, sponsored by Veterinary Associates Equine, followed in a similar suit, with Dean Morgan and MF Starstruck flying through the flags in spectacular style nearly six seconds quicker than the only other double clear.

Emma Buckingham was thrilled with another great show in the bag, and especially excited to be making full use of the stunning grass arena.

“We had a fantastic weekend jumping on the grass arena for the first time this season, the riders absolutely loved it! It was a warm weekend and we are very thankful to our sponsors, judges, officials, ring crew, competitors and volunteers for helping us run a great show. And also to our course designers – Danielle Watts in Ring 1, Edward Bullock in Ring 2 and Wayne Bragg in Ring 3”.

Southern Canterbury A&P

The South Island Riders put on a great display of show jumping. The Gillies sisters headlined the podium in the FMG Young Rider with Emma taking gold on Lafayet Ego Z in 39.40. Defying a family ‘one-two’ was Molly Moffatt aboard Sea Coral who finished the shortened course in 40.32, just a smidge ahead of Samantha and Lumarzo in 40.60.

The Amateur Riders also put on a fast and furious jump off in the Dunstan Horsefeeds series class. Two riders jumped double clear with barely a whisker separating them. Katie Gerrets and Domino NZPH flew through the flags in 33.56, with Gayle Baker on Riverdown Rock N Roll hot on her heals in 33.96.

Sophie Fountain and My Tirohanga Delight were the sole double clear in the AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix, as were Casey Mackintosh and Takapoto India in the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider.

Two time faults picked up by Nayton Mitchell and Brosnacroft Centilivi prevented a jump off and left the win to Hayley Curd on My Miranda who jumped the only clear in The Brave Pants Company Pro-Am.
