Ashburton Area Jumping and Show Hunter South Island Championships

The small Ashburton committee put on a fantastic event for the South Island Championships and had over 400 horses on the grounds across jumping and show hunter.

SH Judges, Joan Couper and Jennie Pike, were impressed with the riders handling the cold start on Saturday, persevering to deliver many lovely rounds. They also noted many riders trying out show hunter for the first time, and their improvement over the weekend as they came to grips with the sport. Show Hunter riders are well known for being friendly and supportive of each other and this was certainly noticed by the judges.

Ring Convenor and Course Designer Rose Thomson presented two courses running simultaneously, horses in the main oval and ponies in a new dedicated area. Rose is a long time local supporter of show hunter in Ashburton, where the calibre of her courses was much appreciated, she produced lovely courses which rode well.

Rose said she ran her classes a bit differently to encourage riders to enter both days.  The judges swapped courses, so riders had the opportunity to be judged differently each day. The aim was to reward consistency while remaining competitive and it appeared well received.

Two lovely days of series classes were held at the Foxton grounds. Louise Ilton and Michelle Lambert presided in the judge’s boxes, and were very pleased with the quality of horses and ponies presented.

Unfortunately, course designer Gail Goodwin broke her ankle on Thursday after slipping on a rail whilst building.  Nevertheless this did not deter her efforts and she was able to direct her volunteers from her car for the rest of the weekend.

Gail said her courses rode well and everyone enjoyed themselves. Championship rounds were run on Sunday after the series High Points classes.
