The New Zealand Horse Ambulance Trust was established in 2016 to fund and procure purpose-built equine ambulances for horse racing and equestrian events in New Zealand. In 2024, ESNZ and NZHAT signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the purpose to assist in promoting the highest equine welfare standards at ESNZ Events.
NZHAT’s terms and conditions must be complied with when booking an ambulance for an event and transporting a live horse. The standard rate and booking information can be found here.
In addition, NZHAT owns a horse ambulance and tow vehicle based at NEC Taupō. The horse ambulance is operated by nominated centre staff who have been inducted into NZHAT’s operational procedures and health and safety requirements.
For the 2024-2025 competition season, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) have committed to sponsoring a horse ambulance at 10 ESNZ Events, including Defender Horse of the Year 2025.
