The Cartown Central Districts Showjumping Group Spring Fling was the place to be in the lower North Island this past weekend, and what a show they put on. Nakeysha Lammers and her lovely Balboa NZPH fronted their second Property Brokers Grand Prix (this time locally supported by Cartown) win on the trot. Just two combinations made it through to the jump off with Robert Steele & Rosehill Park Hermes picking up a single rail, meaning that Nakeysha and ‘Rocky’s’ double clear took home the win.
Nakeysha said “I’m incredibly happy with Rocky’s win at Central Districts. He has been feeling great this season – super keen and happy. He loves going to shows. He’s a clean jumper and turns himself inside out to jump clear rounds for me. I couldn’t ask for a better teammate”
Sofia Williams and Emily Oliver continued their friendly rivalry in the AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix (locally supported by Prydes Easifeed), with Emily and Doctor Jones putting down the only double clear to take the win ahead of Sofia on Buzzie Bees Max who picked up 4 faults in the jump off.
The Brave Pants Company Pro Am (locally supported by Jamieson AG) was a fiercely contested class, with four of the eight competitors that made it through the first round with a clean slate going on to jump another flawless round. The fastest of which, by some six seconds, was Siobhan Ryan on Freehold.
After welcoming her daughter into the world only seven months ago, Siobhan has certainly not missed a beat and hit the ground running into the new season.
“He’s such a cool little horse. He’s pretty ungovernable but he just loves to gallop and jump, so I just do my best to stay out of his way”.
Aliya Berry certainly was on form, not only did she take the lead in a five horse jump off in the FMG Young Rider (locally supported by Kyrewood Saddlery) on Neo with a speedy time, she was also the sole double clear in the NZ Warmblood Association 6 Year Old Breeding Series (locally supported by Kyrewood Park) on Justified NZPH (Candy du Nantuel x Frizzante NZPH/Non Plus Ultra).
Sticking with the age group classes, Mandy Illston was also the only double clear on her and husband Bernie’s homebred Trivia (Numero Uno Xtreme x Belvedere Horizon/Littorio) in the East Coast Performance Horses 5 Year Old Breeding Series (locally supported by The Float Factory).
The NZPH & A1 Equine Reproduction 7 Years Old Breeding Series (locally supported by Equivets NZ) saw a bit more of a fight for the title, with all three combinations contesting the jump off. Kimberley Carrington and her homebred Double J Saga (Euro Sport Centavos x Double J Barmaid/ Double J Repicharge) were the outright winners, stopping the timers in 46.44 seconds after a faultless jump off. Heloise Tolo and the expressive Haupouri Incognito (Amant du Chateau x Haupouri Du Jour/Kannan) also jumped a double clear, in the steadier time of 62.06 seconds. Laine Cameron on Minnesota DHU (Appleton DHU x Waola/Matterhorn) just picked up four faults for third place.
Over half the class jumped a perfect first round in the Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider (locally supported by Lease Solution Ltd), giving the spectators a thrilling jumping off, where five combinations jumped double clear. Nigel Horton and Mandalay Cove were the quickest of these, with Kayleigh Kent and her long- time partner Double J Sponge Bob Square Pants finishing just behind in second place.
Another thrilling class was brought to us in the form of the TiES Futurity TB Challenge where no less than ten combinations went on to the jump off, with all ten jumping a double clear. While the times were tight, it was Emma Kitchingman and Carat Gold that topped the table.
Eliza McDonald would have been thrilled with Mizta Frosty as she narrowly beat Viggo Pedersen on Tribesmen’s Warrior to go home with the red ribbon in a seven horse jump off in the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider (locally supported by Forage Solutions). Tara Gower was slightly slower on Pedro CSNZ to take third place, she also had the fastest time of the class with Double J Image, but sadly four faults relegated them to seventh place.
Heading down south, to the Southern Canterbury A&P Spring Show, Johanna Wylaars jumped into the new season in the same fashion as she left the last, by winning the FMG Young Rider. Seven combinations went double clear, of which Cassera MS was the fastest in 41.18. Not far behind were the Gillies sisters, Emma and her new ride Lafayet Ego Z picked up second place in 41.32 and Samantha and Lumarzo finishing in third in 42.33.
“I was stoked with how Vera (Cassera MS) jumped to start the season off on a high. It was a fantastic, competitive class with seven double clears”.
The AMS Saddlery Pony Grand Prix was only ever going to go Sophie Fountain’s way as she was the only one to contest it with three rides. But she certainly cemented her win with TC Piano Man jumping a solid clear round.
In the Brave Pants Company Pro Am, L’heure du Vin certainly “vent for zee vin”, with Ashley Konig in the saddle they cruised round for the only clear.
Jessica Hore and Molly Smith battled it out in the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider, but it was a convincing win from Jessica and Global PH My Lorde jumping a double clear in 40.45, ahead of Molly and Dynavyte Caribou DL in 47.13.
The Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider provided some thrilling entertainment with a fast and furious jump off. Alysha Verrall on Indian Burt were the fastest through the flags in 45.66, shortly followed by Maddi Thompson with Alfie in 46.16 and then Angela Ruddenklau and Red Rafferty in 47.55.
