Clockwise from top – Johanna Wylaars, Molly Moffatt, Olivia Newsom and Emma Gillies
The Young Rider Team have headed to Sydney for the Trans-Tasman clash this weekend. The 1.20m indoor competition, being run at the Waratah Show Jumping World Cup from August 15 – 17, is done on borrowed horses with teams swapping mounts over the three days. The NZ team comprises South Islanders Johanna Wylaars and Molly Moffatt (Christchurch) and Emma Gillies (Oamaru) accompanied by Olivia Newsom (Tauranga). Oliver Edgecombe travels with the team as Chef d’Equipe.
The Trans-Tasman Young Rider Challenge is an annual event that has traditionally been a gripping battle between the nations. In Sydney in August 2023 Australia claimed victory, however the kiwis turned this around in the most recent challenge held at Larsen Sawmilling Equestrian Championships in Gisborne in January 2024, with a resounding win of 24 penalties ahead of Australia’s 40 penalties.
