It’s been a cracker weekend for New Zealand’s international eventing and showjumping competitors with victories in Scotland and Australia.

Paris Olympic Games alternate Caroline Powell steered her Badminton winner Greenacres Special Cavalier to victory in the CCI4*-S at the last ever Blair Castle International in Scotland, while Hawke’s Bay showjumper Julie Davey rode LT Holst Freda to a win in the Tamworth World Cup Qualifier in Australia, and Liam Rutland with Gallipoli NZPH took out the young rider tour.

“Blair is never a walk in the park,” said Caroline. “The conditions out there made it even tougher too.” The combination scored 27.8 penalty points in the dressage, were all clear in the showjumping and added 13.2 time in the cross country for a final tally of 41.

Coming in second was Piggy March (GBR) aboard Brookfield Future News on 41.4 and Rosalind Canter (GBR) with Izilot GHI third on 46.7. Caroline was also seventh aboard legally Grey on 48.5. The win was particularly special as Caroline has been competing at Blair for 30-plus years.

“Cav did a lovely test so I was a little disappointed in the mark,” says Caroline. “She was a little pro in there. The time is always very tight in the cross country. Blair was a bit of a fitness test for her too so it is good to know where she is at. She hasn’t run properly for a while and was spot on. I am very pleased with all our preparations.”

She was particularly rapt with Legally Grey. “I am so impressed with him. He is the most improved horse in the whole yard at the moment and is going to be quite stunning. I think next year will be a great one for him.”

Dan Jocelyn and Blackthorn Cruise was 12th on 59.6 in the 51-strong class. There were six eliminations in the cross country, with three retirements and nine withdrawals.

Caroline paired up with High Time V to finish second in the 13-strong CCI4*-L on 57.9. The class was won by Wills Oakden (GBR) aboard Keep it Cooley on 50 with Jack Mantel (GBR) on Jack Daniels third on 59.7. Caroline was also 11th in the CCI3*-L aboard Tik Tok. The class was won by Piggy March on Cooley Goodwood.

Across the ditch Julie Davey and LT Holst Freda notched the only double clear in the 18-strong CSI1*-W Tamworth World Cup Qualifier. There were just two clears over the 1.60m David Sheppard-designed opener, with nine coming back for round two where there were five clears, but the only clear slate belonged to Julie who crossed the flags in 58.25 seconds.

Sam Overton and Oaks Cassnova were second on four faults in 48.4 with Billy Raymont and Caprine third, also on four in a time of 50.76. Sam Whale and Fleur Delacour were 10th equal on 16 faults form the opening round.

Jeremy Whale and Kingslea Centrose paced third in the silver tour final, while Luke Dee and Gangster WW placed fifth in the second qualifier and seventh in the final.
