Some of New Zealand’s leading riders again showed their class, with wins in the south to Tegan Fitzsimon (West Melton) aboard Windermere Cappuccino in the Premier League at the Canterbury Christmas Cracker, and in the north to the perennial Maurice Beatson (Dannevirke) aboard Central Park at the Feilding IA&P Show, with Daniel Blundell (Auckland) and Cadenza NZPH taking the honours at the Fiber Fresh Grand Prix Showjumping at Woodhill Sands.

It was a small field in the POLi Payments Premier League (in conjunction with Kinloch Farms), but nonetheless competitive. Tegan, who currently leads the POLi Payments FEI World Cup Series, had little trouble posting a stunning double clear with the ever-careful Windermere Cappuccino. Second and third placed Tamara Silcock (Nelson) with FF Lisandro and Makenzie Causer (Christchurch) on Copabella Camouflage were both on debut at premier level and while they had faults in the first round, both were clear in the second.

It was the first premier start for the season for Tegan and Windermere Cappuccino, who won the series for the third time in 2021-22. “It is nice to be competing in my own backyard for a change,” says the rider who generally spends much of the season based in the North Island. “The aim is always a double clear so it is great to get the win. It was a very inviting premier league track.”

The outing is part of their preparation to head north again in the New Year and she used the opportunity to trial a different bit for the second round over the Sarah Ching-designed course. “It is all training. There are always a few things to work on.”

Tegan welcomed the assistance from Australian Michelle Strapp who is in the country to work with the high performance and national squads.

Molly Moffatt (Christchurch) had a brilliant show, taking the quinella in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix (in conjunction with Saddlery Barn) with her mounts Te Ngaio Raggamuffin and Freestyle Twyst & Shout, as well as winning the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider Series class aboard Glenmark.

Angus Taylor (Ohoka) and Sea Coral took the honours in the FEI CSI1* class ahead of Tamara Silcock (Nelson) on FF Lisandro in second and Courtney Townsend (Darfield) with Corofina ECPH in third. Six started the class with Angus winning on a total of two faults from the two rounds.

South Island won the young rider clash against Victoria (AUS). The hosts – Molly Moffatt, Anna Nalder, Sophie Townsend and Johanna Wylaars – won round one with Victoria – Arienne Holdsworth-Rose, Tori Glass, Mikayla Hogg and Hayden Parker – coming back to take the second round, but it wasn’t enough to take the crown. The competition, which has been run annually between the two countries for around 20 years, sees all riders competing aboard borrowed horses.

It was Grand Prix win number 209 for Maurice, a record he has accumulated since 1983 and on more than 20-odd horses. “To win any Grand Prix is a great achievement,” says the Dannevirke farmer.

He and Central Park have had a stellar season so far, and even the ever grounded Olympian admits it’s “humming along”. “Yes, the season is going OK,’” he says. “That course today was tough enough and a nice Grand Prix track.”

Eight started the Kevin Hansen-designed EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix where Maurice and Sophie Scott (Palmerston North) aboard Waitangi Skynet went head to head. True to recent form Maurice and Central Park were all clean, with Sophie pushing hard for a faster time, but with a rail down had to be content with runner-up. “I was second out and just had to go clear but did cover myself a bit,” says Maurice. “When there are just two of you in a jump-off there’s no need to go silly.”

He credits his wins to others around him – his horses, and of course the team behind the scenes. “Central Park has got to an age where he has matured and doing nicely.”

In the Country TV Pony Grand Prix Emily Oliver (Kapiti Coast) almost managed to continue to the quinella run of previous weeks by other riders but in the end had to settle for first and third with her horses Doctor Jones and Barbie Doll RSNZ respectively. Two of the eight starters came back for the jump-off where neither Emily nor Reef Hicks (Hawke’s Bay) aboard Bits & Pieces could keep their slates clean.

Daniel Blundell (Auckland) and Cadenza NZPH may have picked up a single time fault in their EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix opening round at Woodhill Sands, but it was enough – by a single fault – to give him the win ahead of Liam Rutland (Te Awamutu) aboard Kiwi Delux on two time.

“My horse was a bit spooky today so I was battling with that,” says Daniel. “He jumped really well, and I am just happy for the clear.”

His plan coming into the class was to give the horse a nice prep for the coming Taupo World Cup round. Their victory today was their third this season – two Grand Prix and one Premier.

“It would have been nice to go back into the ring and jump off against Liam who jumped awesome today, bagging his first clear jumping round in a Grand Prix.”

Daniel has certainly ridden the highs and a few lows with Cadenza, who is in his third season with the rider.

“I think I just know him so well now and that is key. When I first got him I just didn’t know what he would throw at me!”

The win topped off a great show, with his two seven-year-olds Royal MVNZ and Rolensky MVNZ, stepping up to 1.35m for the first time, going clear and picking up second and fourth placings. “I have been taking it really slow with them so that is pretty exciting. They are turning out to be lovely horses.”

Elizabeth Pennington-Leaney (Cambridge) and Fast and Fabulous lived up to their name, taking the honours in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix Series class (in conjunction with Burmester Realty), ahead of Zara Main (Auckland) aboard Blue Crush, with Abigayle Martin (Rotorua) and Jasmine Rose coming in for third.

Phillipa Howells designed the courses in ring one, with Gina Moss in ring two and Edward Bullock juggling ring three and riding.
