Sophie Scott and Waitangi Skynet
It was a weekend for pony grand prix quinellas and first wins, across the nation.
Sophie Scott (Palmerston North) and Waitangi Skynet bagged their first EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix Series win of the season with victory at the Peak Equine Health Wellington-Horowhenua Jumping and Show Hunter Champs at Manfeild Park in Feilding.
Just two of the eight starters in the Barlovska Craft Liqueurs sponsored class came back to jump-off the Warren Ives-designed course. Both Sophie and Brooke Edgecombe (Waipukurau) on LT Holst Andrea stayed double clear with Skynet crossing the flags in 32.87 seconds to Andrea’s 33.68.
“It was pretty close alright,” said 20-year-old Sophie. It is just their second season together but they have formed a formidable partnership. “He is an amazing horse. We had a few lucky taps in the first round but it was all business in the second.”
Sophie and her new horse Edison won the FMG Young Rider Series class and she was both first equal and won the style prize in the UltraMox Six-Year-Old Series class with LT Holst Ellie.
Penny Borthwick (Masterton) was first and second in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix (in conjunction with Peak Equine Health) with Rednalhgih Cowan and Foxden’s Merlot.
Eleven combinations started the class with just three coming back where they were all double clear but separated by time. Rednalhgih Cowan stopped the clock at 37.35 seconds with Foxden’s Merlot coming home in 38.67, and Molly Presling (Wellington) aboard Cee Cee filling third with their 42.18-second effort.
It was a quinella for Molly Moffatt (Christchurch) and her ponies Te Ngaio Raggamuffin and Freestyle Tywst & Shout in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix at the South Canterbury and North Otago Area Championships.
Three came back for the second round where Molly kept her slate clean with both ponies but it was her 32.09-second effort on Te Ngaio Raggamuffin that won the day ahead of Freestyle Twyst & Shout who went for the careful clear. Third-placed Johanna Wylaars (Christchurch) and Larabelle went close with their 32.67-second round but paid for their speed with a rail.
Molly also won the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider Series class on Glenmark, heading home a competitive 12-strong field with a slick double clear effort.
Makenzie Causer (Christchurch) continued her class-winning rounds in the age group series, picking up first in both the Matthews Hanoverians Seven-Year-Old Series class with Lord Axel GNZ and the UltraMox Six-Year-Old Series class on Anouk GZ. She was also second in the FMG Young Rider Series aboard Copabella Camouflage, finishing .25 of a second behind winner Emma Gillies (Oamaru) on Chic Xtreme.
The two day show was held at the Waimate Showgrounds and attracted 281 combinations. Emma Barker designed the courses in ring one, Pauline Quigley in ring two, and Tony Hutton in ring three.
Sarah Parkes (Marlborough) had a good weekend at the Nelson Show Jumping November Show, winning both the Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider Series and the UltraMox Six-Year-Old Series with Windermere Centarosa.
In the show hunter rings, Anna Vavasour (Blenheim) won the NRM Open Horse High Points (in conjunction with Mr Heslington Farm) and the combined Carousel Equestrian Amateur High Points Series and Sport Horse Junior High Points Series aboard Flint RC.
