There were a trio of women at the top of the pops at the North Island Show Hunter Championship Show at Pukekohe at the weekend.
Proving oh-so-consistent – again – were Emily Twort, Lauren Mitchell and Victoria How at the Barfoot & Thompson Rural and Lifestyle-sponsored show, which was hosted by the Auckland Show Hunter Group and run at the Pukekohe A&P Showgrounds in sometimes rather challenging weather.

Emily (Henderson) and Cameo KSNZ were the winners of the GJ Gardner Homes North Island Equitation Championship 1m. The combination are no strangers to success having won a national series title last year.
“I am really happy to win this,” said Emily. “It is not ideal ground conditions out there and Cameo tried so hard for me. I am really proud of her.”
The 12-year-old black mare, a Holsteiner Clydie cross, has been with her since she was four.
Emily and Cameo finished four points ahead of Lauren Mitchell (Kumeu) aboard Sonny Bill.
But it was all about Lauren in the Vet Associates North Island Championship 1m where she and her nine-year-old station bred Marokopa CJ won ahead of Victoria How (Taupo) on Kiwi Icon.

Lauren is incredibly consistent in show hunter with her team of horses but the sparkle of winning never dulls. “It means a lot to win this,” she said. “He is a really young horse and quite special. It takes a lot for him to trust someone. It has been a long time getting this far and there have been a lot of bad rounds, so it was pretty special for him to win this.”

Taking out the PGG Wrightson North Island Championship 1.1m was a biggie too for Victoria with her 19-year-old chestnut Kiwi Icon.
“He is getting on in age and with COVID pretty much having cancelled all the major shows for the past two years, it makes this one a bit more special,” said Victoria. “He couldn’t have tried harder. He has nothing more to prove to me.”
India Causebrook (Pukekohe) and LC Telepathy were second, with Lauren and Craighaven Black Heart third.
Camryn Young (Te Kauwhata) and Starlight Samara took the honours in The Workshop 1924 Cat A North Island Champion Pony Hunter 70cm, finishing ahead of Savanna Styles (Clevedon) on Patui Ataahua in second, and Skyla Bellingham (Whangarei) aboard My Gemma Bear in third.
“I am really happy,” said Camryn of her win aboard the eight-year-old part Welsh mare. “I am probably most happy to have the opportunity to be riding my old pony again and to be riding for Starlight Farm.”
Charli Sabine and Hesasuperstar – Site Land Development Category B North Island Champions
The Site Land Development Cat B North Island Champion Pony Hunter 80cm went the way of Charli Sabine (Pukekohe) on Hesasuperstar, with Zara McDonald (Auckland) on Farleigh Catterick in second and Camryn once again in the line-up, but this time on Starlight Sahara in third.
“It’s really good to win,” said Charli. “The conditions were really muddy and bad out there.”
Kate Hammond (Herekino) and Ngahiwi Bush Baby picked up their first rug together when they took the Canter for Cancer Cat C North Island Champion Pony Hunter 90cm by just a single point ahead of runner-up Jorja Entwisle (Pukekohe) on Westbrook Sparkles, with Addisyn Dingwall (Te Awamutu) and PL Arizona in third.
“It’s pretty cool to get a rug,” said Kate, who is a member of New Zealand’s northernmost Pony Club, Awanui. “I think it was quite a fluke.” Ngahiwi Bush Baby is a 17-year-old crossbred gelding from Gisborne.
Course Designer Marilyn Vincent was challenged with producing jumpable courses under trying ground conditions. Judges Robin Potter and Sue Whiddett saw some great rounds with Sue commenting that “the quality of the rounds in the Pony ring was a pleasure to watch. They have really learnt to use the arena and their arena craft is allowing the ponies to jump some great rounds”.
North Island Champs also included two days of series classes.
