GIVE SOMEONE A LEG UP!

Warm-up area etiquette

The warm-up area at a show can be intimidating for newcomers, but if everyone knows and follows the rules, it benefits you and others warming up at the same time. You’ll see these signs at show warm up areas around the country this coming season.

The signs are what we’re calling the Leg Up part of ESNZ’s and NZPC’s Change the Rein campaign. The Leg Up initiative is all about helping each other to have the best competition experience possible; win, lose or somewhere in between, everyone comes away feeling they did their best, supported each other and newcomers feel welcome, encouraged and most likely learned something new.

The following warm up area guidelines apply to all riders, parents, grooms and trainers.

Eventing, Show Jumping, Show Hunter

  1. Be friendly and check in with the gate steward
See how many combinations are to go before you and plan your warm-up accordingly
  2. Ride left hand to left hand
    This helps to avoid collisions
  3. Keep moving forward on the track
Please do not stop anywhere on the track as others are also trying to warm-up. If you wish to practice halt transitions, find a quiet place out of the way of others.
  4. Red flag to your right
Always remember, your red flag is on your right. Please do not jump the practice jumps in the wrong direction.
  5. Stop if there is a loose horse or rider fall
If there is a loose horse and/or someone falls off while warming up, please stop and wait till the horse has been caught and/or the rider gets up before continuing your warm-up
  6. Be courteous to others & have fun!

Dressage

  1. Be friendly and check in with the gate steward
  2. Ride left hand to left hand
  3. Keep moving forward on the track
  4. Walk & halt on the inside track
  5. Stop if there is a loose horse or rider fall
  6. Be courteous to others & have fun!

Endurance

  1. Play fair and look after your horse
  2. Look out for your fellow competitors
  3. Practice good track etiquette
  4. Acknowledge our volunteers along the way, we can’t ride without them
  5. Be here for a good time and long time, don’t go hard too early
  6. Completing is winning

ESNZ has a small budget to print a couple of corflutes for events to put up in the warm-up arenas so they are more durable. To place an order for A2 sized corflutes email [email protected] with which discipline/s your event/venue caters for.
