Maurice Beatson and Central Park led the way at the Jumping Wairarapa Showjumping and Show Hunter Labour Weekend Championships bagging the only clear in the opening round of the EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix class to take the win.

The perennial Dannevirke veteran was chuffed with his 11-year-old gelding who on Friday placed sixth in the opening round of the POLi Payments FEI World Cup (NZ League) Series opener. Bred by Imogen Neale, the New Zealand warmblood horse who is by Euro Sport Centavos, has really found form in the last season. “It just comes from growing up and getting more experience,” says Olympian Maurice who has now won 205 Grand Prix classes.

“The course was tough enough for sure. It had a lot of related lines and took a bit of jumping. I thought someone else would go clear but it was just one of those courses.”

The course was designed by Heather McDonald and Greg Best.

Four combinations on four faults filled second to fifth, with Nakeysha Lammers (Waikato) second aboard Balboa NZPH and fifth with Resolution, Sam Whale (Hampton Downs) and Fleur De Lacour third, and Mathew Dickey (Waikato) aboard Waitangi Imak fourth.

Penny Borthwick (Masterton) has continued her hot form, taking her second quinella of the weekend in the Country Tv Pony Grand Prix, winning with Rednalhgih Cowan and placing second on Foxden’s merlot in the eight strong class.

The company Carissa McCall (Taupaki) has been keeping has clearly been rubbing off. She and eight-year-old Picasso MVNZ were the only clear in the opening round of the EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix at the Northland Jumping GP Show. It’s been a while since Carissa lined up in a Grand Prix, and it was a first for Picasso MVNZ, but you wouldn’t have known it.

In the Country TV Pony Grand Prix, it was the battle of the Zaras in a head-to-head jump-off. In the end, the honours went to Zara Preece-Twose (Auckland) and her lovely mount TC Pianoman who came home with four faults to win, with Zara Main (Dairy Flat) aboard Blue Crush second.

Makenzie Causer (Christchurch) was on fire at the Showjumping Canterbury Labour Weekend Jumping Carnival, winning both the EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix and FMG Young Rider on Copabella Camouflage, as well as the Matthews Hanoverians Seven-Year-Old class with Lord Axel GNZ, and placing first equal in the UltraMox Six-Year-Old class on Anouk GZ.

Oamaru’s Gillies sisters were also in fine form, with Samantha and Socrates De La Ve Z taking out the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider class and Emma aboard Benrose Black Jack placing second. In the FMG Young Rider class, Emma and Chic Xtreme were second with Samantha aboard Lumarzo third.

It was a Molly-fest in Country TV Pony Grand Prix with Molly Smith (Geraldine) on Vapour Trail NZPH taking the win and Molly Moffatt (Christchurch) second on Te Ngaio Raggamuffin and third with Freestyle Twyst & Shout.

Southland Area president Anna Clearwater was pleased with the entry numbers for their Labour Weekend Show. “There was some great jumping on both the surface and grass arenas,” said Anna. The show attracted 218 combinations.

The group had supported the new Leg Up and Ask Me campaign with some good positive results.

The last class of the day in ring one was The Tower Trophy encouragement class which attracted 13 children and their mentors. Erin Wallis and Jubilee Remington Gold rode off with the honours but all combinations had a blast.

Ring one was designed by Emma Barker with Tony Hutton in ring two and Kelly Heckler in ring three.
