Maurice Beatson picked up Grand Prix win number 206 with his victory today in the Evo Events-sponsored class at the Wairarapa A&P Show in Carterton.

He and his homebred chestnut mare Gold Locks were one of just two to go through to the jump-off over the Gary Sinclair-designed course. “It was tough enough out there,” he said. “It was certainly pretty technical in places.”

Maurice and Gold Locks were first out so knew the challenge needed to be laid for Heloise Tolo (Wellington) and Kiwi Bird who were to follow.

However, the best laid plans don’t always come to fruition so when they took an early rail, he pushed on to ensure the pressure was on for Heloise who also had a rail but was slower.

“Gold Locks has been jumping well lately so I was quite happy going into the class.”

Penny Borthwick is proving unstoppable in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix Series class, with another victory today on Foxden’s Merlot. They were the only clear of the opening round with the next five all on four faults. She was also third on Rednalhgih Cowan. The teen from Masterton last year took the quinella in the series with her superstar ponies.

The weather played havoc at the upper North Island, with good draining surfaces certainly showing their worth.

Vicki Wilson and Carpaccio TWS were the victors in the EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix at a very soggy Equifest in Taupo. The weather saw a very diminished field take to a rather flooded outdoor arena to be tested by the Pip Howells-designed course.

Vicki and Carpaccio TWS were the only clear of the opening round and while they took a rail in the second were speedy enough to take the win. “We were quick once we had the rail because I knew we really had to move,” she said.

It was just the second Grand Prix start for the nine-year-old stallion who was imported from Europe as a three-year-old. “He has a lot of scope and feels wonderful to ride. He is very special.”

Vicki said the “beautiful” course had a lot of related lines with the umbrella-holding crowd around the outside adding to the challenge.

Vicki Prendergast (Matamata) and Selena C were second with their four faults over the two rounds, with Vicki Wilson filling third with her homebred Millionaire VWNZ who while had eight in the opener, jumped a “superb, fast” clear in the second.

New Plymouth teen Leah Harre and Good Luck Charlie took out the Country TV Pony Grand Prix with the only double clear of the class, with Samantha-Lee Wakeling (Wellsford) and BMW Sharpshooter second and Zara Main (Dairy Flat) with Blue Crush third – both on four faults.

The Shelley Bridgeman Grand Prix Show Jumping Show at Woodhill Sands attracted 190 horses and plenty of good jumping. “We’re so very lucky to have fabulous sand surfaces this weekend so we could continue as we had 100mls of rain overnight (Saturday),” said competition manager Emma Buckingham. The weather caused the cancellation of the Pony Grand Prix Super Series class late in the show.

Michelle Wakeling (Wellsford) and BMW Chaccolilli bagged the only double clear in the Harrison Lane Pro-Am Rider Series class to take the win at the front of the 11-strong field. Five came back for the jump-off, with Colleen Crous (Auckland) and Orames Girl VDL taking second with their four fault effort.

Sponsor turned ribbon winner in the Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider Series class with Shelley Bridgeman and Oaks Vendetta placing fifth. Elise Moffat (Whangarei) and Exclusive NZPH took the win with a double clear in 45.16 seconds, just ahead of the all clean Kelly Hawkeswood (Whitford) on Sandiego LAD who stopped the clock at 45.51 seconds.

Edward Bullock designed the courses in ring one with Gina Moss in ring two and Christine Bullock in ring three.

Molly Moffatt (Christchurch) had a blinder at the Ashburton A&P Show, winning both the Country TV Pony Grand Prix (in conjunction with Property Brokers Ashburton) Series class aboard her well-performed Te Ngaio Raggamuffin, and taking out the FMG Young Rider (in conjunction with Lysaght Horsecoaches) Series class on Glenmark.
