23 January 2022

On behalf of the 2022 North Island Endurance Championships organising committee, ESNZ Endurance regret to advise the death of a horse in a lower level class on Saturday, January 22. The horse sadly died suddenly on the track, on the third loop of the ride. Veterinary examination showed it was likely the result of a catastrophic cardiac event.

A team of experienced international (FEI) veterinarians were employed at the event, which was run at Whareama in the Wairarapa under strict FEI and ESNZ regulations. The horse had passed previous frequent veterinary inspections with ease and was travelling at a comfortable pace when the incident occurred.

We extend our deepest sympathies to all parties connected to the horse.
