Robert Steele and LT Holst Bernadette have found their mojo again and it turns out they may have a ‘thing’ about Levin.
The Dannevirke combo were the happy back-to-back winners of the EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix at the Horowhenua AP&I Show in Levin yesterday. “It’s been a bit of a quiet season for us. Things just weren’t going to plan so this is a good win. It’s been a while since she has won a Grand Prix.”
Robert along with Katharine Van Tuyl (Palmerston North) aboard Double J Sunshine and Centavino were the only three through to the jump-off over the Gary Sinclair-designed course. “It was quite a forward track and was just what we needed. It wasn’t too tough and I really just wanted to get her confidence back again.”
Katharine was first out with Double J Sunshine and went clear so Robert knew just what he needed to do. “I was lucky enough to go a second quicker.” Katharine had one more shot with Centavino but had the first fence down for third place.
Robert also picked up a second in the 1.3m aboard Two Eye See and third aboard Royal Wish in the 1.25m. “It was a pretty good show for us. Levin is a show that has a lot of atmosphere happening around the ring, and some horses just don’t cope well with that.”
He’s now looking forward to starting Bernadette in the FEI CSI1* at Hawera this weekend with an eye to continue to work carefully towards the Land Rover Horse of the Year Show.
Chloe Roylance (New Plymouth) and Tallyho Cleopatra headed home a nine-strong field to take the honours in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix class ahead of Melissa Berridge (New Plymouth) aboard Onetai Fire and Ice, and Penny Borthwick (Masterton) who was third aboard Foxden’s Merlot and fourth on Rednalhgih Cowan.
