Near perfect ground conditions and new gear made for a successful and very enjoyable MLT and Mainland Coachwork Southland Festival Show in Gore at the weekend.
Saturday dawned slightly cool with light rain but cleared for a beautiful sunny day on Sunday. Both Ring 1 and 2 competitors enjoyed a very welcome upgrade to their jump stands while a new rubber surface in the show hunter ring and beautiful ground conditions in rings 1 & 2 kept everyone happy, according to president Anna Clearwater.
Event secretary Rebecca Drummond said the introduction of the new COVID protection framework just a week before the show meant the team had been planning and preparing for two possible scenarios in the lead up to the show. She extended a big thank you to volunteers and riders for adapting promptly to the ever-changing environment.
Four combinations started the EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix with all carrying faults into the second round where Steffi Whittaker (Christchurch) and Whimsical WDS ruled supreme with their eight fault effort. Makenzie Causer (Christchurch) and Copabella Camouflage came in for second on 10 faults with Nicole White (Invercargill) and LC Samson third and Angus Taylor (Ohoka) aboard Sea Coral fourth.
The ever-consistent Fun House came through for his new owner Angus Price (Winton) with a double clear to take the win in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix. Runner-up Harriet Laing (Canterbury) and Springvale Tama were clear in the opening round but picked up four in the second. Jessica Hore (Millers Flat) and her star Tallyho Scoundrel were third.
The show attracted 247 combinations with Donella Still designing the courses for ring one, Eryn Duffy in ring two and Ian Grant in ring three.
