Auckland riders brushed off the cobwebs and relished in their first event back after 107 days of lockdown and no series competition for eight months, this weekend at the GJ Gardner Homes Grand Prix Showjumping Show.
Around 145 combinations made the most of the opportunity with some excellent classes at Woodhill Sands, the first series show since late March. Event organiser Angela Nobilo says everyone was very happy to be back out competitively jumping after two weekends of training in the lead up.
Even the weather played ball with great weather over the two days and a smattering of rain at night making for perfect footing.
Wayne Bragg designed the courses in ring one with Edward Bullock in ring two and Christine Bullock in ring three.
The honours were well spread across the board. Paula Mussen, chair of Auckland Showjumping, said everyone was certainly hugely appreciative to be out competing. “They did a great job running the show,” she said, “which was the first under this new traffic light system. They had people scanning us in at the gate and good systems in place.”
It was a pretty good show for Paula and a very enthusiastic Déjà vu NZPH, with a win in the GJ Gardner Homes Horse Grand Prix Super Series and a second place in the Harrison Lane Pro-Am Rider Series.
The event had permission from the ESNZ Jumping board to run two days of series, covering the Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider, Mainland Coachworks Junior Rider Series, and the Harrison Lane Pro-Am Rider Series, with the FMG Young Rider and Main-Events Tertiary series held over a single day.
For the next two weekends Auckland Showjumping pick up the reins with shows at Pukekohe, including a full gambit of series classes.
