Olivia Robertson and Grandaire winners of the POLi Payments Horse Premier League

Christmas came early to the Dunstan Fiber Fresh National Equestrian Centre for the Showjumping Canterbury Xmas Cracker on 3-5 December.

More than 540 horses and their riders from all over the South Island made the most of the Christmas spirit with riders and horses dressed in their finest attire.

Secretary Gail Power said everyone was relaxed, friendly and happy to be out competing in the COVID ‘awkward’ times. The hard-working crew behind the popular annual event received plenty of thank yous for their efforts.

Eryn Duffy designed the courses in ring one, Tony Hutton in ring two, Christie Arthur in ring three and Dorothy Scott in the show hunter arena.

Oamaru’s Gillies sisters enjoyed an excellent show, with Samantha and Doctor Jones winning the Country TV Pony Grand Prix, winning the Tavern Harewood Horse Mini Prix  on Lumarzo, placing fourth in the FMG Young Rider with Lumarzo, second – behind sister Emma aboard Chic Xtreme – in the Mainland Coachwork Junior Rider with Socrates De La Ve.

In the two round Country TV Pony Grand Prix (in conjunction with Saddlery Barn), Samantha headed home an eight-strong field to take the honours, finishing the class on five faults and coming home in 53.81 seconds. Runner-up Johanna Wylaars (Christchurch) and Wembleybrook Tiffany were on track for the win until they took the last, to finish on five faults from the two rounds but with a slower time of 58.81.
