Tegan Fitzsimon and Windermere Cappuccino bagged another EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix win today, this time at the Cartown Central Districts Show Jumping and Show Hunter Championships at Foxton.

The West Melton duo haven’t been off the podium this season, with two wins, two seconds and a third in their Grand Prix starts.

Today they headed home 13 other combinations to take victory over an “up to height and technical enough” course designed by fellow South Islander Donella Still.

Four combinations came back for the jump-off where Tegan, as first to go, had to set the pace. She and her 11-year-old Mr Consistent were double clear, coming home in 44.74 seconds. Only Katharine Van Tuyl (Palmerston North) aboard Centavino managed to leave everything up, coming in for second in 48.24 seconds.

“The course rode really nicely,” said Tegan. “My plan is always to go double clear. For us it is about preparation for our World Cup rounds. I didn’t do anything super tight or crazy in the second round, I just kept him rolling. He is naturally quite a quick horse, so if I keep my rhythm we are usually all good.”

She says Jeff McVean has made an immediate impact on the team. “He has been invaluable in training, in the warm-up and at shows,” said Tegan.

She enjoys being first out as it tends to keep things on track. “You ride the course you walked then,” says the 30-year-old. “You stick to your original plan because you aren’t swayed by what you see others do.”

She, groom Emma Jackson and her four horses are gypsies at the moment, floating from show to show. “We are on the road for four weeks this time, living out of the truck full time, just in different locations.”

Today’s win topped off a great show with only four faults between the team. Windermere Cappuccino was second in the 1.35m, LT Holst Harley sixth in the 1.2m and the two six-year-olds Global PH Cupid and Harley both clear on debut in the 1.25m. Tegan opted not to take them through to the jump-off.

In the Country TV Pony Grand Prix, Penny Borthwick (Masterton) picked up another win, finishing first on Rednalhgih Cowan and placing third on Foxden’s Merlot. Fourteen started the class with five coming back for the jump-off where the top four were all double clear. Penny secured the win with her 41.96-second effort with Tessa Mason (Hawke’s Bay) and Mr Acho second in 42.41.

Central Districts Show Jumping Group chair Stephen Nickalls said it had been a brilliant weekend with around 440 horses and riders competing. COVID had caused a lot of extra work but he said it was something everyone was getting used to. “It is the environment we live in now so we just have to get on with it and manage things,” he said.
