It’s been a challenging cross country day at the Sydney International Three Day Event.

Maddy Crowe and Waitangi Pinterest, who were the best of the Kiwis after the dressage, added an uncharacteristic 20 faults to their tally after a run-out, and ended the day in eighth spot on 63.4 penalty points.

Bundy Philpott and Tresca NZPH came home all clear, adding 4.8 time penalties to finish on 36.3 in sixth place, with Clarke Johnstone and Balmoral Sensation adding 14.8 time for a score of 44.4 in seventh place.

ESNZ high performance general manager Jock Paget said it had been a tough day on the Mike Etherington-Smith-designed course. “The rain created some inconsistencies with the going, so the riders had to really take care of their horses in places to help them through,” he said.

Stuart Tinney and Celebration still lead the field. They added just 1.6 time penalties to sit on 28.4 at the end of the day, with Shane Rose and Virgil adding nothing to their 28.8 dressage score for second spot and Stuart in third aboard Leporis on 31.2 after adding 3.2 time to their tally. Just three combinations came home clear and inside time – Shane Rose, Sonja Johnston aboard Misty Isle Valentino who moved from eighth to fourth, and finished the day on 32, and Hazel Shannon with Willingapark Clifford who bounced from ninth to fifth with their 32.3 penalty point effort.

The showjumping is scheduled to go tomorrow afternoon.
