The Nationwide Trophy and Lowry Medallion are both national trophies awarded at the Horse of the Year Show and are based on points gained throughout the show.  Due to the large number of classes now held at the Horse of the Year Show, it is impossible to calculate the winners of these awards on the final day of competition.

But we can now announce the winners of these national trophies having finalised the results and points.

Nationwide Trophy

The Nationwide trophy was donated by Maurice Beatson and is named after his horse which won the Olympic Cup in 1983 and 1984.

This points prize is for the most points gained in open Jumping competitions at the Horse of the Year Show.  Points are awarded for all rings; however double points are awarded for any classes held in the premier ring.

There was a tie for this years Nationwide Trophy with Tegan Fitzsimon and Grace Percy both gaining 28 points, however the rules of the Nationwide Trophy state that should there be equality of points the number of wins will decide.

With a win in the Premier Stakes the winner of the Nationwide Trophy for 2020 is Grace Percy.

Lowry Medallion

The Lowry Medallion was donated by Mr J N Lowry of Hastings and was first awarded as the Presidents Spurs Trophy by W R Duncan then as the Lowry Medallion in 1962.

A fun fact about the Lowry Medallion.  Merran Hain has won the medallion a staggering nine times.  She enjoyed a golden run of six on the trot from 1981- 1986.

This points prize is for the rider gaining the most points at the Horse of the Year Show across all ESNZ Disciplines (Dressage, Eventing, Para-Equestrian, Jumping and Show Hunter).

The winner of the Lowry Medallion for 2020 is Amelia Newsom.

The Tauranga teen, who is better known as Mouse had her first series win this year.  She and Mr Mexico were winners of the Show Hunter Cat C High Points Final and overall Series.

Mouse is rapt to have won the series – albeit by a single point ahead of Kaitlin Brown (Feilding) aboard Tawa.  “It is pretty cool I have worked up to it and we’ve put a lot of time and effort into it. Mr Mexico has been performing so well.”

At eight, Mouse received a life-threatening injury when she was kicked in the face by her horse. Since then, her preference has been Show Hunter. “I like the perfection of it,” she says. “I like the attention to detail that show hunter calls for. This is my happy place.”

Mouse loves to produce her own horses. She also has Moonspirit Jitterbug placing second in the Category B Pony Show Hunter of the Year, and Tribute OL winning many prizes in Junior Show Hunter and Handy Hunter classes.

A big congratulations to Grace and Amelia.

The winners will received their tankards as soon as the National Office is back open.
