Jeremy Whale and Remarkable were just that with their very convincing win in the Equissage Horse Grand Prix at the Outpost Buildings Grand Prix Showjumping Show at Woodhill Sands at the weekend.
It was a small field that lined up in the class but when Jeremy entered the ring, no-one had a clean slate. “I knew I just had to leave all the rails up and that is what we did,” said the fulltime horseman from Cambridge. “I like going last . . . I thrive on that sort of pressure.”
It was his first-ever Grand Prix win. “It was awesome. You always have to back yourself to win and the way he warmed up I was pretty confident he would go well.”
Jeremy has only had the nine-year-old gelding since late December and is riding the horse for Holly and Victoria Yang. Remarkable had been doing 1.2m classes with Victoria since they brought him in from Australia. However, his trip to New Zealand was a coming home of sorts. The horse was previously owned by Sarah Worker who had competed him through the age group series before taking him with her to Melbourne. She then passed him to Katie Laurie to ride and sell and he came back to New Zealand mid-2019.
“While in Australia I knew he had jumped a couple of mini prix so I knew he had a good jump in him,” says Jeremy. He took him to Gisborne in January where the combination were second in the 1.4m and third in their first Grand Prix start. “He just came out at Woodhill and jumped fantastic. He is improving all the time. I think he is a very scopey horse with a bright future.”
Jeremy and fiancé Samantha Matthews own Diamond Lodge where they break in race horses and sport horses, pre-train race horses and school a lot of sport horses too. The couple will shortly celebrate the first birthday of son Harry.
There was just a single clear round in the opener of the Country TV Pony Grand Prix too, with Georgia Bouzaid (Cambridge) and Redcliffs Bill continuing their fine form to take the win.
Danielle Watts designed the courses for Ring 1 with Gina Moss in Ring 2 and Wayne Bragg in Ring 3.
