Emma Gillies riding Benrose Eclipse to win the Country TV Pony Grand Prix at South Island Champs 15-16 February 2020

Competition continued yesterday at the 2020 Select Wineries South Island Show Jumping and Show Hunter Championships hosted by the Marlborough Show Jumping Group.
After finishing on top in the National Pony Grand Prix Championship last month, sisters Samantha and Emma Gillies continued their good form with a quinella in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix. 13-year-old Emma came in 1st riding Benrose Eclipse with 14-year-old Samantha finishing 2nd on board Junior Disco making the big trip from Waitaki Bridge worthwhile. Canterbury riders Johanna Wylaars riding Wembleybrooke Tiffany placed 3rd and Molly Moffatt with Te Ngaio Raggamuffin finished 4th.
The highlight class of the day was the POLi Payments Horse Premier League Grand Prix South Island Championship which boasted $10,000 in Prize money.
Six riders returned for the second round of competition in the Horse Premier League Grand Prix, with three of them on 8 faults. First to go of the 8 faulters was Ashburton rider Lucinda Askin riding Portofino who jumped a clear round with a time of 55.89 to finish 3rd on a total of 8 faults. We then saw Wellington rider Heloise Tolo with Kiwi Bird who also jumped clear but with a faster time of 52.89 to finish 2nd on a total of 8 faults. Wellington’s Sophie Scott on Lakota had to settle for 4th adding 8 faults to finish on a total score of 16. 1st place went to the super consistent combination of Tegan Fitzsimon and Windermere Cappuccino, who jumped a double clear round with a second-round time of 52.40.

Tegan says “The course rode well and was technical enough. Vollie jumped great, especially in the second round. The show has been fantastic, a lot of hard work has gone in and it’s a credit to the committee and everyone involved.” Tegan heads to the North Island for the remainder of the season, with Takapoto Estate first up and then on to Horse of the Year Show and Series Final.
Canterbury rider Beth Coleman took out the Premium Game South Island Speed Horse Title riding Sea Minor. Kaikoura rider Dan Harkerss on board Cocamo won the NPD South Island Speed Pony Title.
Lex Peddie was the course designer for Ring 1. Sarah Ching was the designer for Ring 2, with Grant Burnett in Ring 3.
