Oliver Edgecombe bagged his first Equissage Grand Prix win with Henton Excalibur at the Masterton A&P Show at the weekend, heading home eight other combinations for a well-deserved victory.

The two are in their first season together and have shown to be very competitive and rarely out of the money. This time, at seventh to go and no clears on the board, Oliver knew he had to go for the steady clear and came home with just a single time fault.

The next five were all on four faults, with the placings decided on time over the Gary Sinclair-designed course.

“The time was probably tight enough,” said the Waipukurau farmer. “Rachel (Malcolm) did a beautiful job producing this horse and he’s always very competitive. But it’s not all plain sailing. He is pretty active to ride and cocky with it.”

Oliver plans to start him in the Silver Tour at Takapoto Estate Show Jumping followed by the Premier Stakes at the Horse of the Year Show.

The Country TV Pony Grand Prix saw just Samantha Carrington (Takapau) and her 13-year-old mare Colours of Lansing notch the only clear of the opening round. Again the four faulters decided the minor placings on time.
