Portofino & Lucinda Askin

Wild weather did little to dampen the Christmas Spirit at the Christmas Cracker Show, held over the last three days at McLeans Island, South Island National Equestrian Centre. Organizers were faced with at times challenging Norwest wind conditions but like always Show Jumping Canterbury put on a fantastic show.

The Rangitata River between Ashburton and Timaru is also in flood so the State Highway 1 Bridge and the only alternative route are both closed until further notice. This left all riders from South Canterbury, Southland and Otago stranded in Canterbury.

The POLi Payments Horse Premier League Class was taken out by Luci Askin riding the 15-year-old Thoroughbred Gelding Portofino. Luci has had Portofino for nearly four years and although they have come close in the past, this was their first win at this level. Luci also won the 1.25m Horse Championship riding Double J Cyclone and placed 2nd in the Horse Mini Prix with the Flying Dutchman DHU. Next up for Luci is the National Show Jumping Championships, at McLeans Island on 16th-19th January, and after that she plans to work towards the Horse of the Year Show in Hastings.

Local rider Johanna Wylaars had a lot of success over the weekend in the pony classes. Johanna won the Country TV Pony Grand Prix on Wembleybroke Tiffany, the Equi-lise Pony Points riding Larabelle and placed 4th in the Pony Mini Prix with Dingmac Disco King.

After picking up wins in the 5, 6 and 7-year-old classes on Friday Katie Meredith continued her success in the Tavern Harewood Horse Mini Prix. Katie won the class on Ngahiwi Double Cross and also placed 5th with Westgrove GNZ.

Donella Still was the Ring 1 Course Designer, Emma Barker was designing Ring 2 and Geoff Bryant was in charge of designing Ring 3.
