Glen Beal had plenty to love about the Northland Area Jumping Grand Prix Show in Whangarei at the weekend.

As well as taking the quinella in the Equissage Horse grand Prix, he also placed second and third in the Grand Prix Super Series and had a promising round on his third mount.

Glen and the 12-year-old All Expenses of Renton were the winners of a compact Horse Grand Prix field with 14-year-old Sacramento second. All Expenses of Renton is owned by Trish and Graham MacPherson. Trish bought two yearlings – one was All Expenses of Renton and the other Airfare of Renton. “The aim was to flick them on and get an overseas trip,” says Glen. However, she still owns both horses and is riding Airfare of Renton herself.

Glen was rapt to have Sacramento back in the competitive arena after two years out. “He hurt himself a couple of years ago and it has just taken a while to get things right.” Northland was just its second or third outing of the season and the Vicki Prendergast-bred horse took just a single rail at the last.

Sacramento is the younger brother of Glen’s good little mare Solano. Both are out of Vicki’s 4* mare Sanderston who went to the Sydney Olympic Games as an eventer.

Glen also competed at Northland aboard Soprano, Solano’s eldest daughter, for a lovely clear round in the its first 1.2m class. “They all jumped superbly all weekend,” he said.

In the Country TV Pony Grand Prix, just Maddison Greatorex (Waitemata) aboard Spotified and Shanae Savannah on Tiger Tale LS were clear in the opener with Maddison a comfortable winner in the end with a speedy double clear.
