There has been some confusion around the age of the rider and how this is determined for classes at Horse of the Year.

In jumping and show hunter, age is based on the season, as opposed to the calendar year.

The classes pertaining to age of the rider have been clarified below:

Class 4 – Aspiring Rider
From the beginning of the season (1st August) in which they reach 16 years until the end of the season (31st July)  they reach 21 years.

Class 9a – ESNZ Equitation Medal
Until the end of the season (1st August – 31st July ) in which they reach 13 years.

Class 9b – ESNZ Equitation Medal
From the beginning of the season (1st August) in which they reach 14 years until the end of the season (31st July)  they reach 17 years.

Class 37 – Rising Star
From the beginning of the season (1st August) in which they reach  13 years until the end of the season (31st July)  they reach 16 years.

Class 40 – Emerging Rider
Until the end of the season (1st August – 31st July ) in which they reach 12 years.
